WHEN DID U FIND GENDER?

Hi I was wondering when did everyone find out the gender?

I'm a ftm and I'm 15 weeks 2 days, and keep reading ppl finding out the gender before 15 weeks around 16-20 weeks.

I know high risk pregnancies you can find out sooner, but what's the normal time to find out for a typical pregnancy??

Does it depend on the dr? I have an appt 16.4 weeks and hoping that appt I will find out? Or is the gender scan a separate appt???

Helppppp :)))

Re: WHEN DID U FIND GENDER?

  • The normal time is your 20 weeks scan. I live in the uk and my hospital have a policy that they won't tell you until your mid scan because of mistakes. I mean my 20 week scan is at 19 weeks but the letter still says "we will do our best to provide you with an accurate idea of the baby's sex, however please bear in mind that this is not always possible and is not 100% accurate" so I know it is standard practice to get the gender scan here at the anomaly scan. :-) I haven't found out yet (15 weeks too) and will be finding out at that scan if I possibly can! Xx

  • You can find out through genetic testing as early as 10 weeks, but this is done for high risk pregnancies. Regular low risk patients find out at the anatomy scan which is done anywhere from 18-22 weeks.
  • Most elective ultrasound facilities start with sex determination around fifteen weeks. Most physician offices start anatomy scans around eighteen, and finding out the sex is an added peek at these scans.
  • I am 16 weeks and I just found out we are having a boy. We went to a third party US facility that does gender determination, US pics, DVD of US and gifts! I paid out of pocket and had a great experience.
  • I'm 14 weeks this week and we are going to a sonographer at the end of the week to see. My best friend had it done at 12 weeks 4 days by the same person and she was correct. Another close friend had it done at 13 weeks by the same person and she was correct as well. We are 'need to know' kind of people. If anything, we'll get to see the baby again. I've spent much more money on less things in my lifetime.

When I went for my 13 week appointment, we couldn't hear a heartbeat but saw the baby on the ultrasound. At this point, after not being able to hear the heartbeat then, I'll take an ultrasound every week if able. Do what you're comfortable with. Everyone has their own thoughts on this one. Also, all sets of grandparents are going away this coming weekend and if we can tell them it's a girl or it's a boy...they can have a ball shopping! haha It's just a fun time and enjoy it!!!

  • We had a loss in dec that turned out to be due to Turner syndrome. My doc encouraged us to get the testing done at ten weeks this time. Everything came back normal and we found out the sex as well. It's a girl :)

With our son who is now five we found out the sex at 18 weeks at our anatomy scan.

Personally I wouldn't trust an early us enough to bother doing it. I'd agree there's a good chance they are correct but I wouldn't be confidant enough to start buying things. Have fun with it if you want to though :)

  • Typically it's during the anatomy scan which falls between 18-22 weeks at my clinic. I did pay for a separate scan yesterday with my doctor though solely to find out. I'm 16w.

  • I found out the gender at 10 weeks through blood draws but when I went for a sonogram at 14 weeks they could see it was a girl as well. My co worker found out through a sonogram at 15 weeks.
  • I'm 12 weeks and found out yesterday. I am also high risk and they did all these tests without knowing.

    We'll be finding out at 20w. :)
  • They told us I would have been finding out in about 2 weeks(which would have been next week), but the desk lady screwed up my appointments and scheduled my regular appointment for the third of June and after that one is when I have my next sonogram.
So I will possibly be around 20 weeks but they said I could find out around 15 weeks.

Just post something saying "gender" and the trolls come out of the wood work.

I wouldn't exactly say it's "trolling" to try to make sure people are using the correct terminology.  Sex is biological, gender is social.  I know of a person on this board who has a transgender partner, and while I certainly can't speak for them, I still feel it's important to know the difference and use the proper terminology.

I am aware and that was not what I meant.
There is a person who constantly argues the opposite of what you just said and always/only comes out on these posts. Nice try though.
My apologies, I didn't realize that's what you meant.
  • And it starts again :/
  • I don't come to these FORUMS ON AN APP ON MY PHONE, to be lectured and corrected on my grammar or terminology. I have enough professors in my life right who do that enough! If I want a lecture I go to grad school! Lolol

My it's cute how distinguishing between gender/sex makes people feel soooo important!

In ordinary speech, sex and gender are used interchangeably! So get over it! This is not human sexuality 101 I've already taken that class! Lol

Oh wow! That sounds fun! Was it expensive??

I found out it was a boy at 12 weeks 2 days by chance. I had my IPS screening done and the tech had to do an internal US. Baby spread his legs wide open and there it was.
Tech said unless he has a tail it's a boy ;)
We are still doing our gender scan at 18 weeks to confirm but the tech said once it's there it doesn't fall off!

Your over the top reaction is a bit much. Just because you use sex/gender interchangeably doesn't make it right. Maybe just say "hey thanks for sharing that with me". Defensive much?

I can't wait to find out the sex! My sister found out at 13wks. I go back at 15.5 weeks for my next US and I'm hoping we can found out!!
  • If we can't use the term GENDER, then why is it called a gender reveal party?? Should we change the name to sex reveal party?

It's not about what you are "allowed" to do. Gender/sex are often used interchangeably incorrectly. The nurse at my doctors office asked if we wanted to know the gender when she emailed our blood test results.

I don't blame anyone for not knowing the difference. However, as Oprah says, when you know better you do better. ;)

  • I wasn't arguing, I was simply asking a question. As for science, it is all an argument, all they do is try to prove each other wrong every chance they get. It changes constantly. Not really a fan. Good luck in your pursuit to change the entire population's opinion on the name of a party. @mmk29
  • So... After reading the almost constant debate about gender vs. sex on this board and doing my own research I have a question. I hope that no one takes this the wrong way because I'm genuinely curious and believe in equality and being sensitive to others, which is why I have the question in the first place. Once you find out the sex is it no longer appropriate to buy and/or register for gender specific items? This might be an ignorant question and if it is I'm sorry. I just don't want to be offensive to anyone and a lot of you ladies seem to want to help.
