My niece is thinking about using Boden

For a boy. Is Boden a real name other then for a clothing line?? Either way, I don't like it. I am just wondering if it is a real name

Re: My niece is thinking about using Boden

  • It's a clothing line, a surname and a place name.  So as for a first name, no there isn't history to back it but it's in style about as trendy as you can go hitting those three areas.

  • Google says it's an Anglo Saxon name meaning messenger!

    Not a fan either

  • Boden is poo poo. If she uses it, just call the kid Bo.
  • Tell her it's the stage name for one of the strippers in Magic Mike 2.

It's not, or probably isn't, but totally sounds like a male stripper name.
  • I know someone that named her son Boden and it's just... NMS. Really not a fan.
  • Well all I think is "clothing." About the same as naming him "Banana Republic." I mean, banana is already a noun people recognize, and lots of places are republics, so why not? Sheesh.
  • I know a Boden. He is a sweetie. So I have positive associations with the name. I probably would not have picked it myself.

  • I love it! Unique, strong, and classy! This being said, i gravitate toward names which other people do not have or have tainted with association.

Honest question, how is using the name of clothing retailer classy?  It gives me the complete opposite vibe.  It reminds me of people who walk around wearing coach shoes, hat, scarf, umbrella, purse and belt.

    Coach is my baby name.

Nothing is Klassier then naming your child after a mid range faux luxury brand. That's why my child is going to be named J. Crew.

    On what grounds?

Well apparently using Boden means your child will not be forgotten... Whether that's good or bad seems to depend on the crowd!
  • Yes, I think the name "Boden" is classy. It is unique without being hard to pronounce. It has always been on our "short list" of boy names. Just because it is a children clothing designer doesn't mean that it is a horrible name. What about everyone who names their child Carter, Macy, Janie or Jack?!? Same difference, right?!?
  • No, because those are all names that have been around for a while and are not only associated with a brand.

Both Carter and Macy are surnames, Janie is a diminutive of Jane and Jack is a diminutive of John, but ridiculously popular.

Boden is a relatively uncommon surname, so most people associate it with brands rather then people. My first though seeing it was someone was trying to make Bode more special.

Google knows nothing. "Bode" is actually a Dutch word for messenger. Word, not name.

God help us all. This is foolishness. I'm sorry, you're never going to convince me that giving your child a surname as a name that isn't a family name is "classy". Or maybe it is "classy"...I'd rather walk through hot coals for 8 hours than associate with people who use the word classy or the regular.
