Lethargic? FTM question?

Hello :)

My daughter turned 3 weeks old yesterday and for the past two days she has been really sleepy, sleeping through feedings at night, like 3-4 hours and falling asleep while nursing & refusing to wake up to eat more.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with a growth spurt of if its just normal. I try waking her up but it takes some convincing. I just want some advice, especially at night when she's asleep. Should I wake a sleeping baby to eat if she's sleeping more hours?

Pediatrician says she's great & gaining weight as well as having lots of wet & dirty diapers. Any help please- I know babies can get lethargic?

Re: Lethargic? FTM question?

  • My son was very hard to wake up for feedings. We would have to undress him and move his arms and legs to make him angry so he would wake up, then he would eat.

Good luck, and I hope she is just being stubborn and is not lethargic.

My doctor told us if our son wants to sleep through the night and has gained His weight back and isnhealthy take advantage of it and let him sleep. He will wake when he is hungry or needs something. (He started doing this at 6 days old) and does it most nights!

While I've been told it's okay to let her keep sleeping, I've found its impossible for me to do due to my boobs waking me up soaking through the bed and hurting like hell. So I wake her when my boobs wake me! It's usually once a night.
  • We've debated about waking our LO, as he started doing long stretches right away, but noticed that he's gaining weight really well at doctor's appointments, so we decided to let him take charge. We just went though our first "wonder week," where he was waking up 2-3 times a night to feed instead of one (and was more fussy in general). Now that he's returned to his approximately 7 hour stretch at night, the first night my boobs woke me up and we got him up as soon as he started stirring (about 2 hours later) when I couldn't stand it anymore. My boobs have readjusted pretty quickly, though.
  • If she's healthy and gaining weight I wouldn't wake a sleeping baby to feed, she will let you know when she is hungry and wants to feed. Enjoy the quiet time while you can!
  • If she's back at her birth weight then there is no reason to wake her to feed her. My DD is 7 weeks and she will go a week sleeping for 7hr stretches at night and then she will hit a growth spurt and will be up every 3. Just feed on demand.
