FTM very worried, obgyn prescribed Doxycycline

I'm 17 weeks & have heard the heart beat every month now & this time had to go back cuz of a bad yeast infection. She prescribed me Doxycycline & of course I google side effects. Everything I read said do not take while pregnant. So my question is who has taken this & baby turned out just fine? I know I have to trust my doctor cuz she wouldn't put my baby in danger. She was the one who handled my missed miscarriage last year I only got to 10-11 weeks then & that baby didn't have a heart beat but this one does a strong one! We hear it every time & my next ultrasound is at the end of the month so will know gender then. But I am still very worried!!

  • Talk to the pharmacist and also call your OB's office for reassurance. I'd be a little hesitant like you are...

Doxycycline is a tetracycline drug. That's the one that causes discoloration of the teeth in utero, and young children. I don't know what other harmful effects it could have. I wasn't even allowed to take it for my rosacea while I was going to be trying for a baby so it wouldn't be in my system.
I would not take it that's for sure. Yes you need to trust your doctor but you need to be proactive too. I'm baffled why any Doctor would prescribe this drug during pregnancy.

Don't take it - it's a Category D which means there is positive evidence of risk. Call your doctor back and ask for something different that's a class C or better (assuming something exists). It may be that this is the safest thing they can find for you. =\

You were prescribed Doxy for a yeast infection? I worked at an OB/GYN and don't recall that being prescribed for yeast ever....It's an antibiotic. Many women get a yeast infection after a UTI b/c antibiotics are often prescribed to treat the UTI. I may just not be aware of all the uses of Doxy, but I'd be worried that even if it didn't pose risks to the baby that it would exacerbate the yeast infection.

I'm not sure if it is safe during pregnancy, but usually Diflucan (generic is called fluconazole) is prescribed to treat a yeast infection. I'm glad you're hesitant to take what was prescribed. Obviously I don't know your case and I'm far from a medical professional, but that's just my experience with Rx's for yeast infections.

  • I was prescribed amoxicillin for a sinus infection this past week, I know that one is safe to take...maybe ask them to switch it? But usually antibiotics cause yeast infections so not sure why your doc would put you on one in the first place...

do not take any prescribed medication that you're not comfortable with, especially when you are pregnant. It is your choice. Doctors are very quick to write prescriptions for anything and everything. There are many lovely and effective natural remedies you can use for curing a yeast infection. I would suggest trying those.
  • Thank you everyone!! Sorry I forget to add she did prescribe me the fluconazole but Im a Lil embarrassed on this one but the doxy she prescribed me once for trich. But she didn't say it was back though. I am highly allergic to anything penicillin. All she said was she wanted to get rid of it for good so maybe she wanted to make sure the trich didn't come back.

I was following this today because I was so curious about more to the story. @karichielle95, I have no idea what trich is, but did you call to check with your office today? I'm interested in the pros/cons she must have weighed before prescribing it!
