Re: NBR - Bruce Jenner interview

  • @CMDD Laverne Cox had a similar statement. Hopefully we will raise our children in a generation that truly (honors? Respects? Has? Not sure what word I want here...) gender equality. W9T5https://www.refinery29.com/2015/06/88509/laverne-cox-tumblr-caitlyn-jenner-response#.d0cqj5:W9T5

Yes. I really liked how Laverne talked about Caitlyn's SOUL more than appearance.

I was not going to say anything on this post, but I ran across an article this morning and thought I'd share because it's interesting and I think it should be thought provoking. I will say I'm not a Conservative nor am I a liberal, I'm just me. I will also say that while I understand intolerance of an idea, if it opposes your idea, intolerance of a person whether you think they are right or wrong really displays an ugliness that we should all avoid especially carrying around these bumpies. A lot of you don't think how I think about this, but I will not attack you as people, women, or mothers because at the end of the day, that's where I believe our identity lies - not in our sexual or gender desires or how we feel about those desires. I have compassion for Bruce even though I don't understand it all. Peace, Love and hair grease... happy bumping to all of you!
Yeah,  im thinking an article from "Conservative News.com" is going to be CLEARLY biased on this subject. If that psychiatrist did really did say that, how many other psychiatrist that are respected have said the opposite?

I would really really take that information with a grain of salt and do additional research on a non biased website..

Homosexuality used to be categorized as a mental disorder too. And was punishable by death. Just take a look at the etymology of the word 'fag'-- little pieces of wood used to start a large fire (i.e. burning at the stake)

I so hesitate to get involved in this. But, screw it, I'm bored. My husband laid out an interesting theory last night about Bruce Jenner specifically and how he really isn't a good representation of transgendered people. Here it goes, this should be fun

When they look back at young men who were taking performance enhancing drugs, which he was, they find many of them later in life start identifying as female. The steroids makes the body naturally reduce the amount of testosterone it produces. Then later in life the natural testosterone gets estrofied, for lack of a better term. He explained the chemistry of it, escapes me now. This is why you will see see male body builders of athletes in later life develope breasts for exams. This is a theory of what MAY be happening to Bruce, specifically. He hasn't always felt like a woman, just later in life due to something he specifically did to his body.

This obviously isn't representative of most transgendered people. And why I'm not sure he should be the voice of a population that has naturally felt like this their whole life. But I suppose if he gives a voice to this and can help people understand, then in the end it's a good thing. Just some food for thought. Different way to look at this particular situation.

Regardless if this is or isn't a cause for Caitlyn, I find this theory very interesting!
  • For the PP that was mentioning how gender reassignment surgery is free for Iranians that are gay… It should be noted that it is covered in full and that Transgender is not the same thing is homosexuality.

Yes! In no way are transgender the same thing as homosexuality. I just found that episode very interesting and sad that they almost had to resort to the gender reassignment only because of where they lived and how their society and government viewed one over the other.

    Absolutely agree!
  • @VegDumpling I'm not sure I see what you are directing me to. I don't see anything related to this topic on there. Could it have changed over the day?

Love this. I thought the same thing while just scrolling through this board, even.

It's as if people feel better about THEMSELVES by praising Caitlyn's appearance...maybe even thinking that supporting her transition in appearance will help boost Caitlyn's confidence (not that we little people have an effect on that, but media outlets do). However, I'm pretty sure that Caitlyn's transition runs much deeper than her appearance. She's going to need encouragement for her ability to freely choose who she wants to be, not encouragement that she's "bang-able," as Jon Stewart so aptly put it.

That goes for all women. I think most of us can admit that we feel better about ourselves when we look better - but is that really because WE like the way we look, or we like the way that people RESPOND to the way we look? What kind of way of life is that, to let our happiness depend on how other people feel about our appearance?

I'd like to see transgendered women and men bring attention to this subject, as they have a point of view that none of us do. They can tell us what it's like from both sides, and how grossly unrealistic and unfair our perceptions of each other can be (yes, of men, too).

Most importantly though, let's give praise to Jon Stewart for bringing this up! Leave it to him to say what no one else will.
  • @kimb311 oops sorry! Yes, this was the original headline this morning: https://www.cnn.com/2015/06/03/living/caitlyn-jenner-transgender-reaction-feat/index.html

"Her celebrity status is great for visibility, but it can and will be used as a distraction from the lived experiences of trans folk who continue to battle discrimination when accessing basic needs such as housing, employment, education and health care."

you were pretty spot on with your previous post
