Stroller suggestions?

I'm researching different strollers, and went to Buy Buy Baby just to look around and see what options they have (uhhhh, can you say overwhelming?!), and I honestly don't know what to look for. What stroller do you all prefer, and what were some of the key points you look for when buying a stroller?

I apologize if I sound ignorant... Since this is my first child, I have to start somewhere! :)

Re: Stroller suggestions?

  • Hi there! I bought a Bugaboo Cameleon yesterday. A few things I like about that strollers is that it's for kids from 0-4 years old. You can click the car seat onto the frame, or the bassinet and later on you can use the seat. You can choose the let the kid face you or the opposite. The rear wheels are bigger but if your are driving through snow or sand you can move the handle to the other side so you have the bigger wheels on front which makes it easier. The stroller isn't that big and folds pretty small. I love all the different Canopies that you can choose, different colors, the normal canopy, the extended one or a breezy summer one. Those are some of the reasons why I love that stroller! :) It all depends where you want to use it for. I love to hike, go for long walks, have a medium size car, we have lots of snow in the winter and warm summers and I have dog so every day I'll go for a walk.

Good luck with finding your perfect stroller!

  • Like Judith said, it really depends what you're using it for. I have 2 cheap umbrella strollers (one in my car and one at home). They're great for quick trips to the museum or the store and when you're traveling by air. I had a Peg Perigo stroller when DS was little but it got one of the wheels broken/stuck within about 6 months so we got rid of it. I also have a Graco all-terrain stroller. It's really big and heavy so not great for travel but it's great for bumpy roads, grass, gravel, hills, and it's much better for going on walks. (It's got big tires and 3 wheels for better maneuverability and less hunching over). It is NOT a jogging stroller and shakes if you try to jog but since I only run if something is chasing me it's not an issue. Britax makes some really nice strollers too that I think are less expensive than the bugaboo.
  • We have the city mini. I love it! I wanted something that could convert to our car seat. There is an attachment you can buy so it sits on the top. We actually wound up getting a chicco caddy for the first few months before baby transitioned into the actual City Mini stroller. So the caddy you just pick up the car seat and plop it into the caddy. So it essentially can't be used without a car seat. it's really convenient if you have a baby that will sleep while you're shopping or walking around. You don't have to wake them up to put them in another stroller. The Citi Mini I liked for comfort. It's super easy to fold and push. I liked that you could change the height if needed and it has a little window to see into the baby if you need to while the cover is down. i hope this makes sense. It's really all about personal preference and what you're going to be using it for!

  • We have the UPPA baby vista. Got it with my oldest and this will be our third to use it. Ditto pretty much everything about the Bugaboo post :)
  • To piggyback on this post, I'm DYING for a stroller with a bassinet. But most of them are pretty expensive or you have to buy a separate bassinet attachment that is $$$. We live in the city and would go for frequent walks with the baby around the neighborhood, but realistically speaking, he or she will be born in October. How long would the baby even use the bassinet for? Obviously we won't be going for walks in the dead of winter. I'm wondering if it would just be a waste of money.
  • My favorite strollers are from Peg Perego.  They are amazing quality, and push is so smooth and easy.  We have (from DD) the Skate, Si, and GT3 for two.  The Skate is discontinued, but it's our main stroller that we use the most.  It's so versatile.  The Si is like an umbrella stroller, but accommodates an infant car seat, has a flat recline, and was perfect to pop in and out of the car.  The GT3 is a 3 wheel that we use for rougher terrain.  It also accommodates an infant car seat.  We've also owned the Baby Jogger City Select, and while it was very multifunctional, it just didn't handle as well as the Skate, so we sold it.  We also had the Bugaboo Frog, but wasn't overly thrilled by it, so we sold that one too.  Honestly, these strollers are more expensive, but I would highly recommend splurging on a good one.  The Graco's (and other brands like it) are just so bulky and a beast to push.
  • We have the city mini single and city select double. The mini has a compact fold, can use with car seat, and super light. I do like it more for older kids (since it doesn't rear face) and for zippy trips. The select is nice because you can flip the seat to face backwards, and obviously use it as a double. We use this one as our work horse stroller.

If I were to buy a new stroller today knowing what I know now I'd probably do the uppa baby vista (can rear face, compact, quality, and use with car seat). If you are planning to have multiple kids close in age, I'd do the city select.
  • The BOB is hands down the best stroller on the market! It's easy to fold, pushes like a breeze, has great storage, reclining seat, large canopy...I too, had a very expensive Bugaboo Chamelon but it's in 2 pieces you literally have to put together when you want to use it...most people don't relize they are holding a baby or a car seat at the same time.
  • My sister is a professional nanny (10years) and uses a city mini on a regular basis. She loves it and would recommend it.

My husband and I bought a used Bugaboo frog on Craigslist (recommended and found by my nanny sister). It is amazing. They discontinued this specific model, but it is similar the the Bugaboo chameleon.
  • I am not willing to spend and arm and a leg on a stroller bit want one ghat is safe for baby. Chicco (recommended by a maternity nurse friend) makes a inexpensive stroller that baby's carseat can snap right on. I have purchased this particular stroller for friends and family and have gotten rave reviews. This will be the brand we register for.
  • I've used the BOB stroller with a friends kids. Love it. Can jog with it, has good storage, maneuvers really well, great canopy, and folds down pretty small given its size. They're pricey but you can find them used - I just got one used for less than $100 and it's in perfect shape. Also, you can get an adaptor to click a car seat onto it.

  • We have a BOB Revolution and love it. We are pretty active, so that's why we went with a jogging stroller. We were going to get a travel system or cheaper stroller in addition to it, but now at almost 20 months, DD doesn't need anything else, nor do we. The BOB is super smooth, easy to fold up and unfold, and DD can lay down or be upright in it. We also got the carseat attachment for our Chicco Keyfit, and we used that for the first 6 months or so. The double BOB Revolution is crazy expensive, so we're watching for one on a garage sale site or Craigslist. I like that I can do just about anything with it, and I don't need sidewalks :) We registered for it and received it as a gift, but registering in general would guarantee a discount, so I highly recommend doing that!

  • Loved Peg Perego with my previous babies, so when I noticed the Peg Perego Switch on sale for $150 off at BuyBuy Baby, we ordered one. I like that it can be rear facing or forward facing.
  • With our first we bought a graco travel system. Liked it, got the job done. Now I'm pg with baby2 and we need a double stroller since DD will only be 18 months when this one is due. We bought the Baby Jogger City Select and wish we had just done that from the start. We would have saved some $$. If your planning on having more than 1 kid, get something that can convert into a double in case you'll need it.

  • I have a city mini gt and really love it. It has an adjustable handle bar which is good for me and my husband so we're both comfortable. It closes easily with one hand and folds up fairly compact. The all terrain tires are great and even roll easily on gravel. I feel like the storage basket on the bottom could be bigger, but it's fine. The seat can recline for a younger baby or sleeping toddler. I'd buy it again as we've been very happy with it.
I do have a cheapy umbrella stroller as well for when we are in crowded areas since it's much smaller (great for parades and whatnot). Obviously, this is only an option once baby has very good head control and can sit up.
My advice it to narrow down your list and go try them out. Open and close them, lift them up like you're putting them in your trunk (some are super heavy), drive them through aisles, attach a car seat, etc.

I'm about getting the most for my money. I got the BOB. You do need to buy the attachment for the car seat to be able to snap into the frame, which I think it the only downfall because most are included. BUT I love how the weight capacity is 75 lbs. I take it with me everywhere and haven't found a thing to complain about it! I hope you find one you love!
  • What do you guys think is a good middle ground for price ....dh wants me to get a w.e brand no more then 200$ with car seat !!!!!!!!! :(( ...I said to him go suck a toe I'm not lugging around a heavy ugly stroller just because you want to cut corners there, don't mean to sound bratty if I knew that's all we could afford I wouldn't complain BUT ITS NOT !!!!!!! I think 500$ is more reasonable but w.o the car seat lol .... I really like the uupa baby Cruz and the philandteds stroller and bassinet system and trgat is about 100$ less then the Cruz but I have never heard of that brand its new to me ..any ideas?

  • There are lots of great strollers out there, but you really have to examine your life and what you will be doing with it.  Do you guys walk a lot or jog?  Do you go on hikes? Will you be using it mostly indoors?

We have a snap and go for the first few months then we use our BOB revolution or an umbrella stroller depending on where we are going or what we are doing.

  • We had a Chicco snap n go for the first few months. It was/is awesome! I used it for over well over 6 months and it has a giant basket. There are a few versions depending on your car seat.

For after that I now have the Britax B Agile. It's identical to the city mini except it has a lock button on the side. I love the huge adjustable canopy and decent basket size. My biggest complaint is the lack of cup holder, but you can add one. I also have a Maclaren umbrella stroller from a yard sale. They are expensive from the store, and you can tell why if you use a cheapo one. I love them both and use them both in different places.

  • Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments and suggestions! You have all made some very good points, which is helping me get an idea on what we want/should get. Next time I go to Buy Buy Baby, I won't feel as overwhelmed and will know what to look for in the stroller department! :)

  • Buy buy Baby is also great about consulting you. If you have any questions whatsoever, they are more than eager to help you sort through to find what's best for you. We registered there and they took us through every dept, explained everything (FTM) so it was very needed. We registered for the citi select because we want to be able to use it as long as possible and it can be converted to a double (or even more if you add the glider) and it's more economical overall than the vista.
