Baby Names

Sovilla

As some of you know, I'm a Peds nurse and recently heard a new baby name (rare nowadays) and I absolutely LOVE it!  I wanted to get a feel for what you all think of it.  It's pronounced SO-VEE-YA and is Amish or Dutch in origin. ...and go!

Re: Sovilla

  • Eh I'm not finding much on it being legit, maybe a surname. I can't say I like it and at first glance I wouldn't have said it how you wrote out.

  • Just going from the sound, I like it. It's got that sort of universally pleasing musicality that made Sofia so popular. I think it would be mispronounced 99% of the time, however, in the US at least where people aren't used to double L making a new sound (not so much in areas with large Hispanic populations).

  • Not a fan... just sounds like a youneek attempt at Sofia to me.

It sounds pretty, but it is going to be mispronounced all the time.
  • Dislike.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • Amish and Dutch are two very different cultures.

They aren't called Pennsylvania Dutch because they're Dutch.
  • I think it sounds pretty. I would have assumed it was a surname used to honor someone. I was correct in the pronunciation, luckily, but I think many would mispronounce the name.
  • So I had to laugh when I saw this post! I actually know two people with this name - my mother-in-law and the aunt she was named after. They both pronounce it So - vil - la just like it is spelled. When she was little people called her Sovie (So - v). I don't know anything about the origin of the name. Sorry!
  • It's definetely not a Dutch name. Sevilla is actually a Spanish city. In Spanish, Sovilla would come close to Sophia. Honestly, the name looks like a mess to me.

    Too close to Sophia
  • Hmm...maybe it was a made up name, maybe it was a surname. Either way, parents were Amish and older with legit Dutch heritage (I'm well aware that Dutch doesn't equal Pennsylvania Dutch, lol), so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a youneek attempt @samanthaj0e.  Well, thanks for the responses.

This is what I was thinking. It reminds me of Sevilla. Not sure how it sounds Dutch.

I'm sure it had meaning to them. I didn't say it was created to be youneek, but that is what it will sound like to other people. It's definitely a weird name to come from an Amish family... the double L sound that Sovilla makes is not a typical pronunciation in Pennsylvania Dutch, or any dialect of Midwestern Amish linguistics.

Agreed. I'd never seen it on this board, so I wanted to see how others perceived it. Thanks for all the responses!
