B6/Unisom

Hi all! I had my first "real" appt with the midwife today. Got to see the baby, and heartbeat and everything looks great!

When reviewing how lousy I am feeling, still plagued with nausea with night time vomiting, she suggested I take 25mg of B6 (not to exceed 200mg per day) along with a unisom at night. Anything helps, especially since I have horrible insomnia and lay awake easily 2-3hrs in the middle of the night. I just have a hard time taking a "sleep aid" while pregnant. Obviously, if it wasn't safe it wouldn't of been recommended, but Ive always been of the thought "less is best" when it comes to taking meds. Just wondering if any of you have taken the B6/Unisom combo and if it helped relieve of lessen your night time symptoms? Thanks!

  • I take B6/Unisom at night, and dramamine (which REALLY knocks me out)!! I feel it helps bc I'm sleeping-- I don't feel sick! I haven't had any problems from taking it! :)

    Hope that helps!

  • B6/unisom are the ingredients in Diclegis, the only FDA category A (meaning safe) drug approved for morning sickness in pregnancy. So...you should be just fine taking it! Just a heads up though--you may want to ask for a Diclegis prescription bc the unisom is slowly released, rather than all at once, so it won't make you as sleepy :)

  • I've been taking half a unisom at night for 2-3 weeks. It helps!
  • It saved my life! Take it!!
  • I too had serious insomnia and was taking unison. Although it is considered safe, it's still class B and only tested on animals. I was told not to take on a regular scheduled dose to treat my sleep disorder. Then i discovered
"Natures Calm" Ionic Magnesium Citrate Powder. which is a magnesium supplement.
oh my goodness, it relieved my insomnia!!
i still wake up often to pee, but I easily fall back asleep. Did some research and consulted with "mother risk" and my family doctor. Aside from it being a sleeping aid, magnesium is very critical in baby's growth and help preg woman's body for labour.
most múlti-vitamins only carry 50 mg and its good to take up to 400 mg.
i take 200 mg a night before bed.
  • I've been on Diclegis for the past month and a half and I have to admit it's the only way I would have survived this pregnant!! Like blsav23 wrote, it's class A and is quite safe. It helped tremendously and I feel very comfortable taking it.
  • Does insurance cover it?
  • If your comfortable taking it and it has been very helpful, then power to you.
Just sharing a natural alternative that has helped me. Hmm I was told by Mother Risk and 2 pharmacist that unisom is a Diphenhydramine Class B. See link to article

  • Damn I wish I would've known ... I suffered so badly the first 11 weeks . Week 14 now and I like food and sleep again
  • Does insurance cover it?

Mine covered the Diclegis. I have Horizon. I paid $30 for 2 months worth. It varies by insurance so you can always call or check in their site to see how much it covers.

  • I've been taking this combo for about a month now and it changes everything! I slept so much better and felt like a human during the day!

I agree, this combo has helped me too! Outside of feeling like a bloated Amazon it has been great. @peanut05 don't be concerned. Happy/sleeping mama equals happy/healthy baby.
  • I highly recommend! had severe nausea 24/7. My doc gave me a sample of Diclegis and it was a lifesaver. My insurance only covers generic medication, so I took the over the counter combo once my sample ran out. I am now 13w 4d and I no longer need it, so hopefully you don't need it for too long.
  • Can I ask - I might sound silly but do you take the 2 together (at the same time)? My nurse practitioner recommended the combo but something keeps me from trying it even though I'm suffering from my nausea.
  • Thank you all for the feedback. Last night was by far the worse night I had yet...hardly slept, and woke up to nausea in the middle of the night. Will be purchasing both today!!

  • Unisom knocks me out... Even 1/2 a pill. I found that I was ok taking about 1/3 pill and 25mg Vitamin B6 (couldn't find that dosage anywhere but Amazon, just FYI) together at work to combat nausea if I had slept well beforehand. At home I'd take 1/2 and the B6 and sleep a good 10+ hours at a time, waking up pretty groggy. I did score some Diclegis recently and the time release does help me not to be so drowsy.

Yes you take them together. You can also take the B6 just by itself during the day to help with the nausea. My doctor just said to stay under 100 mg/day. I was worried about getting hooked on the Unisom, but once I started feeling better, I just take one 25 mg B6 at night and have been sleeping fine.
  • My doctor told me that Unisom was originally used as an anti-nausea medication. However the side effect of severe sleepiness made it change the marketing to sleep aid. I think that you do what you are comfortable with and what helps you.
  • My lifesaver. I've been taking it since 6wks(now almost 11) as I had severe nausea and vomiting. Doctor recommended it and i was amazed at the difference in the following days.
  • I was taking just one Diclegis at night. It helped me sleep and made the nausea better. Unisom is category B but that's because it hasn't been tested in pregnant women. The only drug I know of that is category A is the Diclegis. It isn't ethical to test drugs in pregnant women and I'm sure the company that makes Unisom doesn't want to spring for the cost but it has the exact same active ingredient as Diclegis.
  • I've been taking the 2 together every night and it's helped so much.. one night I somehow forgot to take them I slept horrible and felt bad the next morning.. I would definitely suggest giving it a try.
  • I've been taking 75mg of B6 during the day and the unisom at night and it has saved me! As insurance goes, I bought both on Amazon for under $20 for both meds for a month's worth. Well worth it to feel better!
  • This might sound silly, but if I take it before bed, will it still work for me in the morning? I only have morning sickness right when I first wake up.

Yes, it will. That's not a silly question. I would probably ask the same thing. :) My "morning sickness" was always at night and taking the meds the night before lasted 24 hours. I could tell when it wore off and reminded me to take it again. So you should be totally fine taking it at night and getting some relief in the morning.
