Girl name choice help

We are Team Green, and still haven't chosen a girl name. Here are our top two:

Della Rosemary
Veronica Rosemary

I hate trendy -ella names, but Della seems a little cooler than overused Isabella/Arabella/Anabella. I always loved Veronica. Initial thoughts? Not telling family and friends, so you ladies are my sounding board!

Re: Girl name choice help

  • I actually like both. I picked Della mainly because I do not like the nn Roni or Ron.

  • I like Veronica. However,  I do have a friend named Veronica who was nn Roni.

  • Yeah, I hate the nickname Roni. My dad has a cousin that always went by Ronna, which I could tolerate.
  • I went to school with a Veronica that went by Vera. I always thought it was a bit of a stretch but it worked.

  • Prefer Veronica. Not a name a I would try to nickname.

Della just doesn't sound like a complete name to me. It's also not very feminine. Definitely not my style.

Veronica is lovely. Although Veronica Rosemary is a bit of a mouthful. I'd probably just use Rose for the middle.
ETA: I'd also avoid a nickname with Veronica, really doesn't need it.

Curious-- Why do you view Della as not very feminine? That is so interesting! I can't see an ounce of masculinity in it!

    To OP--
Of the two, Della is more my style. I also think it sounds better with Rosemary. If you use Veronica I like PP suggestion of simply Rose (although Veronica Rosemary isn't awful by any means, just a bit of a mouthful).
  • Not too worried about Veronica Rosemary being a mouthful since middle names rarely get used. We're for sure using it as a middle name.

Della is from Gift of the Magi. Classic name that isn't overused. As for femininity, is that really a concern when people are saddling their kids with horrible unisex or invented names these days? Lol. I think it's plenty feminine.
  • I've never heard of Della, but I don't like the sound of it. My vote goes to Veronica.

I don't think Della sounds masculine at all. But I also don't feel that's very feminine either, just my opinion. I'm rather traditional when it comes to names, not a fan of unisex names either. I guess I just like a little more frill on my girls names, so for me it is a concern. Della just doesn't have that for me. It is still a nice name though.

I forgot about Gift of the Magi... great source. Della is a nice name, just not my style. As I explained in the previous post, I like a bit more frill for a girls name, like Veronica. Della just doesn't have that for me, but that doesn't mean that I think it masculine. As for it being a concern, for me it is... because my traditional style likes a feminine name for a girl, and a masculine name on a boy. Not really a fan of the unisex names, unless paired with a feminine or masculine name (i.e. to mix old and new, traditional and modern).

I see. Sounds like what you're calling "feminine" is what I call "girly." To me there is a difference. I see your point though!

I think if a name is strictly feminine usage (not unisex--which Della certainly isn't) then it's a feminine name. But as you said, not all feminine names have that girly frill (Veronica definitely wins in that category).

    To OP--
I love that you got the name from Gift of the Magi! Love the reference (and what a great character to be named after!)

    Veronica no nickname needed
  • Okay, let me start off by saying that I like Della. I didn't immediately (its not a name you hear often and as with many unheard names you need to adjust to it) but I feel like it could really grow on me. Definitely feminine and I like that its a nice reference, is uncommon, and is short and sweet.

I am going to tell you this just because when I consider a name I am interested in hearing what images it brings to mind for people. When I first saw the name I thought Della Burke (I then realized the actress I was thinking of is Delta Burke). I then thought of Della Reese. Depending on your age you may not even know who they are and certainly your daughter's peers won't know who they are. However, because of these associations when I hear the name I think of an older, heavyset woman. Please don't let that deter you, though. The thing about connotations that go along with a name is that they all fade away when you meet an adorable little girl with the name. Suddenly, that's all you see. Its why we picture pretty little girls when we here Abigail, Hannah, Sophia, Madeline, etc...and not old ladies like we would have pictured 20 years ago or so.

I love Veronica. Its a favorite of mine.
