Nausea

My doctor told me the cause of nausea is acid related, like acid reflux. I was told to take tums for my nausea, and if that didn't work they'd prescribe me a prescription antacid. This seems a little odd to me, couldn't there be other factors that make you have nausea during pregnancy? Anybody else gone through this?

Re: Nausea

  • Have you noticed other signs of reflux that is causing your Dr. to come to this conclusion? Nausea is usually caused by hormones, which is why it usually decreases in the 2nd trimester (as the placenta takes over and the hormone levels start to come down).

  • I believe my nausea is acid related due to the fact that I throw up stomach acid. Within the last week my nausea has subsided for the most part but I still deal with nausea on occasion. I try tums but they do not help. I would say give it a try and if not maybe try the antacid from your doctor. I hope you get to feeling better soon feeling nauseous is awful!!!
  • I would say he is probably right if your nausea is the worst after eating and/or when lying down. If it's worst when your stomach is empty, it's probably regular pregnancy nausea. Mine always comes back for a few weeks in the second tri.

  • I take unisom which is an OTC sleep aid but it has the added benefit of helping with pregnancy nausea. Just half a tablet every night keeps my nausea and heartburn in check. My midwife was totally on board with it and it's completely safe for baby. I didn't need the sleep aid, but I must say that as I get more uncomfortable it is a nice thing to have.
  • I haven't heard that about the unison, might have to look into it. I usually throw up after I eat, and it doesn't matter what it is. Cereal, pasta, Chinese food, salad, etc. Some days I'll be fine and other days I can't keep anything down. Laying down seems to help some. My husband not understanding what "give me some space" means doesn't help either lol.

The active ingredient in unisom (doxylamine) and vitamin B6 are the two ingredients that make up Diclegis, a prescription medication specifically for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

ETA: You should speak with your healthcare provider before starting any OTC meds.
