TTC after 35

Any advice...

I'm seeing a new Midwife later this month for my annual exam and pap. I just got on H's insurance and this practice comes very highly recommend. I'm excited to work with them, they are very pro NFP/FAM (and fx have a great birthing center). Anyway, its the first time I've been able to see a non Planned Parenthood gyno (self employment= crappy insurance options) and I've never really needed more than a refill on my BC.

So I was wondering if you lovely ladies had any insight into questions I should ask re:preconception concerns, general gynecological stuffs, worries about AMA, ect. Or if I'm totally over thinking this feel free to tell me that too. Thanks :)

Re: Any advice...

  • Yay for getting better insurance.

If this is your first time there they should do a full blood work up on you. If they don't order it, just ask.
Tell them you are trying to conceive. and see what they say. If you have been ttc for over 6 months with good timing you may want to get a referral to a RE if you want to go that route. If the gyn suggests putting you on fertility meds run and find a new doctor. The only ones that should prescribe meds like that are RE's.

Im a little jealous as there are no midwives in my area. I'm a more naturalistic person and would love that kind of doctor.
Well good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • @lennonkdc, I reread your intro to remember you're story.  I would be open with the midwife and let her know your own concerns about TTC, ask if she has any advice, and make a solid plan for what you're going to do.  I'm a planner and always feel much more calm knowing what's going to happen (if you're not, please disregard!).  For example, I would say - "I'm hoping to begin trying to get pregnant in April, if we're not successful after 6 months, what would you plan?  My preference would be that I make an appointment to see you to begin some preliminary testing (blood work, HSG, semen analysis for my husband) and get a referral to a specialist for further help.  Is this a plan you can go along with?"  If she, in turn says "I can give you some Clomid if you're not pregnant in a few months, no big deal..."  find a new provider.  :)  AND, hopefully you get pregnant right away and need none of this, but you can rest assured you have a plan!!

    Good luck!

  • @emsmama15 I am a planner too (hence starting to post on a TTC board a cycle early...) So I like your idea for asking what her plan would be if we're not successful within a 6 month time frame. I just want to find someone who listens to my concerns in a way that lets me know I'm heard. And then if I'm being neurotic tells me to knock it off and relax :)
