3rd Trimester

41 weeks and facing induction

Hi all,
I'm exactly 41 weeks pregnant with my third and facing a lot of pressure from my Dr. to schedule an induction.  We checked the amniotic fluid yesterday and everything looks fine, so I'm planning to wait it out for at least another week to see if spontaneous labor begins.  I've been 1 cm dilated for 2 weeks, with no effacement or progress since, so my thoughts are that this baby just isn't quite ready.  My other two kids were born at 40 weeks 6 days, and 41 weeks, both labors started on their own and I never had to use pitocin.  Looking to hear any thoughts on inductions in general - since I have no experience with them personally - and going past 42 weeks.  I'm not opposed to inducing if there is a medical reason but at this point I just don't see any reason to give into one.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts and positive vibes!

Re: 41 weeks and facing induction

  • Induction isnt bad. Ive also been able to go into labor on my own and needed pitocin to get me going more because my labor stalls and i dont progress with dilation.

  • If everything is healthy with your pregnancy, you are within your rights to refuse induction. My doctor said he wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks, but I was having blood pressure issues and had to be induced at 39w3d. I wouldn't go much past 42; the placenta can start to break down and not provide as much for your baby, but that's up to you and your doctor. Good luck!
  • The baby will come when he/she is ready.
I agree with you . Stay strong

  • I went into labor with my first naturally but my second was never going to come out. I had a scheduled induction and it was nothing like I was expecting. I was scared to death but everything was fine. It was definitely smooth sailing and a lot easier for me. I got to get my epidural before they broke my water and never had any pain that I could feel. I didn't have any side effects from it at all.

  • I've been induced twice. First was for low fluid 1 day early. Second was 9 days late after my water broke and contractions stalled. With my third baby, I had a membrane sweep 6 days late hoping to avoid another induction and I had her 20 hours later. The membrane sweep was WAY easier than being induced with pitocin. I got to 9 cm without much trouble. I didn't have any pain meds with any births. I will definitely opt for a sweep this time around over being induced again.
  • I was 41 weeks pregnant and my midwife said that if I don't go into labor within 5 days, she would expect me for induction. But that was not in my plans, I was all for natural birth. so, after I got back home, I started using all the possible methods to induce labor naturally. And voile, my daughter was born the next day:)
  • If everything was looking good, I would be pushing back at this point too.  So much can change this late in the game, baby might just need a day or two more!  For my own comfort level, I wouldn't be willing to go past 42w.  My MWs recommend induction on the evening of 41w6d provided everything else looks good.
  • I was induced w/ my first.  Shortest & easiest delivery to date.  From start to finish was 4 hrs & 45 mins.
  • Don't do it if you feel and know that it's not right. No one has ever been pregnant for 11 month ;)
  • It sounds like you don't really need an induction right now. Even though you've heard a lot of stories about great, easy inductions-they are not all like that, and pitocin is no joke. I would hang in as long as possible.

    QFT. I hated that stuff.
  • I'm a FTM but I spoke with my mw and she said that they do membrane stripping before inducing and she said no one has gone more than 3 days after the membrane stripping how all goes well good luck

I have to disagree with this. I was given a membrane sweep and it did absolutely nothing but cause some bleeding and cramping for a couple hours afterwards. I ended up being induced.

This is what my Dr has experienced is what I was saying
