Weaning BF at 10 Weeks

Please no judgement- My son is 7 weeks & I will be returning to work in 3 weeks. We had to formula feed for the first week due to low milk supply & we have continued feeding some formula then on the breast every 3 hours ever since. I HATE pumping and it will be difficult if not impossible to do at work. Therefore I'll need to wean & go all formula. He takes a bottle well but seems to like the breast for comfort. What are the best tips for weaning this young? I know I probably should have never started but I wanted to experience BFing & figured some breast milk is better than none at all.

  • You should contact a Lactation Consultant. She will be able to tell you exactly how to best go about weaning. Your hospital or pediatrician will have contacts.

  • What I did was I slowly decreased pumping. I went from pumping every hours hours to pumping every 4 then 5 then skipping the night pumpings etc eventually my milk just dried up. But as stated above maybe speak to a lactation consultant. I did have some plugged ducts along the way but nothing major that I couldn't massage out on the shower
  • I am planning to do the same thing when I go back to work. Although I won't have the issue of getting used to bottle. I've been exclusively pumping & feeding with bottle. My OB recommended 2 or 3 weeks before I go back to work to start skipping pumping sessions (aka feeding) & feeding with formula that time. She said start skipping with one feeding for 2 or 3 days and then do 2 feedings. So on and so forth. Then milk will start to dry up. She said it will probably be somewhat painful but better to wean then to just stop BFing all together. Good luck!
