ER Trip

I had my 1st scare last night. Went to the bathroom before bed and found brown discharge in my pantyliner. Freaked out went to the ER. I was told I'm 6 weeks pregnant and bleeding possible miscarriage. I'm on bed rest until I see my OBGYN. This is sooo scary. I didn't hear a heartbeat. Didn't see the ultrasound. :-SS ~X( (

I was told it was old blood, and that my cervix was closed so right now as far as they know. The baby is fine. I was also told I have another fibroid. I had a robotic myomectomy 2 years ago, the fibroid was 8 pounds.

I so sorry about the possibility of a MC, but if it makes you feel any better- I've had bleeding with two pregnancies that were ok, including this one. And around6 weeks is when the heart just starts beating so it's possible it was too faint to pick up or it hasn't started yet.brown blood is ok! Red and heavy is not.

I'm sorry for your scare, but you really should not go to the ER for brown discharge. Unnecessary ER visits are the number one reason for skyrocketing insurance premiums. All they do is check your cervix, sono and send you home as a threatened miscarriage. The ER cannot save an early pregnancy. Next time please stay home, call the on call ob who will tell you to stay hydrated and off your feet until the bleeding stops. Only go to the ER if you're filling a pad of blood in less than an hour. This is my 1st pregnancy and I went to the ER scared out of my mind. I talked to the Emergency Nurse At My OBGYN and she basically said the same thing. I had a 250 co pay and that was no fun but I just needed to know. I'm a teacher, not a physician. I will get an appointment first thing Monday morning with my OBGYN. Hopefully all goes well.

Sorry to hear of you scare. I literally had the same thing happen to me and it scared me shitless (this was only last week). To make it worse the blood I had drawn a few days before my OB said my levels were low. I had to wait all weekend for the blood retest see if my levels were up to see if I had miscarried. Monday morning I got the call that my levels were up. The next day I went in and saw my little pea pod and heard a very faint heartbeat they told me light brownish pink spotting is normal. Only go to the ER if you're bleeding red blood, like a period or have severe cramping. Apparently it happens in a lot of first pregnancies. Just take it easy, keep your feet up and no sex until you're cleared for it.

You don't have to be a physician to have some common sense. What did you think they would do for brown discharge? I had an early miscarriage last March and the thought never crossed my mind to go to the er. I started bleeding, and I was miscarrying. I didn't need anyone to confirm that. Brown discharge is not reason for an er visit. I don't care that your co-pay was $250. You unnecessary visit to the ER affects EVERYONES premiums. Not just yours.

This is my 1st pregnancy and even tho they couldn't tell me why I was bleeding they could confirm that my cervix was closed and I had not miscarried. Keep your opinions on what I do with my money to your damn self! It's people with slick comments like the ones you made above that need to just be quiet. What she said may have been tactless due to your concerns but what you just said above sounds terribly uneducated. Copay are a part of most medical plans and it is because of unnecessary ER visits and people not paying their medical bills that ER copay are so high. That's why there are other choices that are equally, if not more, adequate such as a late night emergency line at your doctors office or a 24 hour or late night Urgent Care.

I spotted a bit with my second pregnancy and she's now a perfect 9 1/2 year old. Try not to worry too much! I hope you get good news from your doctor tomorrow!

Ignore the people who are immature enough to worry about ER visits. I have never in my life seen such an unsupportive, immature group of women in my life! The stupidity I've seen here in the last two days is appalling!

I know why I pay a copay! I said unnecessary because of her comment about my unnecessary er visit making her premium go up! I love how all these ppl want to discuss whether or not I have common sense or if I am educated. I also went to the ER this past weekend I am currently 6 weeks pregnant with my first and after many rounds of trying and now IVF. ($20,000 dollars later)  I understand next time I should calm down and post a question and wait for someone who is not my doctor tell me everything is fine. This is good to know for my day of labor, I will post a question on what to do and wait for a NON M.D. or Never educated OBGYN on what to do.

How DARE anyone tell another person when they should go to the ER! Each and every person has a right to go for any little thing they desire. She sounds like a responsible person who pays her bills, so she is not the cause of our healthcare problems. It is people who routinely go to the ER and DO NOT pay their bills that cause costs to increase. Perhaps you need some further education before you try to lecture someone else.

Jeez, at least she has insurance and is paying her copay. What kind of person rants about your insurance when a first time mom is just concerned? I pay insane amounts of money for my insurance, but if someone feels they need to go to the ER for peace of mind, so be it. Blame the insurance companies for your insane premiums if anything. @asfoxworth‌ Goodluck on your OB visit. Hope you and baby are okay. I know it's hard, but try not to stress.

I'm very sorry you had a scare. Most OBs will tell you to go to the ER if you are bleeding and filling up more than one pad in an hour. Anything else, you're best calling the night service.

6 weeks is very early for a HB. Don't worry yet. We had no HB at 5.5 weeks and a strong one at 6.5, so that's how fast a HB can pop up.

Spotting in early pregnancy is very common and if it's light then not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes spotting can also be a sign something is wrong like an eptopic (which they thought I had on last pregnancy and I went to ER) it is always good to get yourself checked over for any bleeding in early pregnancy for both you and baby. I hope it settles down cervix being closed is a positive x

OP, this is my FOURTH and if I had brown discharge or spotting of any kind I would freak out and go to urgent care/the ER. Don't pay any attention to the negativity, you did what you felt you needed to and thank God you got a positive answer from it all!

I don't think people are saying it's wrong to visit the ER or intentionally trying to be rude, but if you go to the ER every time something weird happens in pregnancy, you'll be there all the time. And that would get incredibly stressful! Usually the night service at the OB is very reassuring, as they'll tell you specifically what to do for your situation. I've called many times, and always felt better afterwards. They're YOUR doctors, and they know you. Use them.

Plus there's no co-pay!

This forum is for anyone who damn well pleases to be on it, you cannot dictate what I or anyone else on this forum says. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

And also, they were able to confirm that your cervix was closed and that you had not miscarried, but what would have happened if your cervix HAD been open and you HAD miscarried? Absolutely nothing, It would have been the same result....a wasted trip to the ER.

No, YOU are the asshat. They will deem ANYONE who is pregnant that goes into the ER as a "threatened miscarriage" because that's what they have to code it for insurance purposes. They can't code it as "crazy person with brown discharge misusing the ER".

I am NOT rude, I am a pissed off tax-paying citizen who is sick and damn tired of people using the ER for every little fucking thing. The ER is for broken limbs, a child or baby (or any persona) with an extremely high temperature, constant vomiting or diarrhea, gunshot wounds, and open wound requiring stitches, etc. etc.....NOT a 5-6 week pregnant woman that is having some light brown discharge or light spotting. READ: THE ER CANNOT SAVE AN EARLY PREGNANCY

I told you, I wasn't TRYING to be rude, I was trying to educate you and others on the proper use of the ER. Do you really think that was something that you should have done? What did the end result do for you, really? Give you some peace of mind that you couldn't wait to find at your OB's office? My whole point is, whether you miscarried or not, the ER wouldn't have been able to do a damn thing about it. And it has nothing to do with "you or how you use your money". It's how people in general are sorely contributing to our skyrocketing insurance premiums. If you don't want to have to pay that $250 copay for the ER (which is actually much less than most people pay), then don't go to the damn ER when you don't need to.

Unnecessary ER trips are a big problem in America. I would just be much more judicious with trips in the future. I personally am not blaming you, but would strongly advise against it in the future before speaking to your OB's office.

It is true, nothing can prevent an early miscarriage that is going to happen, anyway.

At my hospital I can't even be seen until I'm 8 weeks. So if I have any complications before hand I HAVE to go to the ER. The ob/gyn will not see me given its not yet a viable pregnancy in their terms before 8 wks. I can understand being worried and wanting to go to the ER. There's nothing they can do for a threatened miscarriage but they could do the first of a 48 hour beta blood draw to check if hcg levels are decreasing which can help confirm a miscarriage and give the pregnant woman some type of knowledge about what's going on with her body. This forum should be for support. Not for debating the misuse of ER visits.

Sure, my delivery may not have been the best. But in the two weeks I've been pregnant, I've probably seen 2-3 DOZEN women talk about going to the ER in early pregnancy for spotting and/or bleeding in this and a couple other pregnancy apps. It is just baffling to me. I am not an "immature little girl" as someone so laughably called me. I am an educated, 35 year old woman who has a child and had also been through two miscarriages. Never once did I consider going to the ER during those miscarriages. What are they going to do? Sew up my cervix so the poppyseed sized embryo couldn't get out? I just get annoyed because of lack of knowledge, common sense and logical thought. If anyone paid attention to their HR departments when they gather everyone together to explain insurance benefits, they would know why their co-pays and deductibles are as high as they are (misuse of the ER - which means EMERGENCY room). And yes, "FFS" I've mentioned it a lot in this post, but no one seems to give a shit about anybody but themselves so you're all right. I should just move on and not try to worry about my or my family's future and their health care. Whatevs.
