Papp-A

hey ladies just got my 20week appointment and was informed about my baby having low papp-a! She said it was nothing major just slow growth that would require extra monitoring... It has me a little freaked out! Of course I did the dumb thing and looked it up on the Internet... Seemed more serious than my doctor was letting on, idk am I freak if out over nothing? Any of you ladies dealing with the same thing? Advice... Thoughts...

Re: Papp-A

  • Honestly first time posting on this site thought it was meant for women helping women, asking other pregnant women for advise and see if they are having similar experiences. Thanks for proving that incorrect pooh bear. I was asking if anyone was diagnosed with the same thing. As my mom always said 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'

  • Hi OP. I too have a low Papp-A. I understand you're position and how scary it can be. My first advice is to talk to your OBGYN. My second advice is to avoid the Internet searches. I'm a NICU nurse and I work closely with my OBGYN professionally. I'm very honest with her about my fears (about premature labor, preeclampsia, etc.) and she too is very honest with me about how this will impact my pregnancy. She also said she isn't worried about this at all. I am also being followed very closely for growth, and see a doctor every 2 weeks. (My OBGYN monthly and genetic monthly, but the visits fall between each other). As nervous as I was initially, I feel really comfortable with my care and my doctors approach. Also, I feel really reassured knowing I see a doctor every 2 weeks, and get to see my little girl on U/S everyone month.

So, talk with you doctor about your care and plan for the rest of your pregnancy. Best wishes! =)
  • I too was told I have low Papp-A. My OB also seems to think it's TOTALLY no big deal; said it typically results in smaller babies and that they're just going to "hover" a bit more than they otherwise would. So I will have another ultrasound at 28 weeks and another at 32 weeks. I totally understand your fears... I felt completely fine about it until I started reading things on the internet and it freaked me out too! So, I'm just staying away from the internet now and trusting my OB. Hope you can too and that you find some peace! Take care!
  • It's not your baby that has low papp-a, it's a hormone that is produced by the placenta. And it doesn't mean your baby WILL have slow growth, it's a possible indicator that your baby MAY slow in growth towards the end of your pregnancy - and only in about 2% of women with low levels of the hormone. Again, get more information from your doctor, and less from the internet.
