NST prior to induction?

Re: NST prior to induction?

  • Most OBs will do NSTs when you are post dates to be sure LO is doing well. It doesn't really have to do with having an induction. I had one yesterday (40+4) and will have another on Thursday (41 weeks). I also have a BPP on Wednesday. I do have an induction scheduled for Friday, but would still be having all of the testing done if the induction wasn't scheduled.

As you pass your EDD there are higher chances that your placenta will start to deteriorate and not support LO. It doesn't always happen, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

  • I've had a NST every week in January but I'm 39 and I know age has something to do with it.  I have another scheduled for Thursday.

I was induced at 41+1 and didn't have one, however from reading these boards I know it's fairly common practice to have regular NSTs once you are past your EDD.

  • I was induced with my first at 41w4days, I had an NST the day before. They said it was to make sure my daughter was doing well enough for induction.

  • I"m only 35 weeks (tomorrow) and have NSTs twice a week.  Its not biggie just your doctor being cautious and extra careful of the health of your lo.  I don't think it actually has anything to do with the induction. She probably just wants to check on your baby since you are "overdue"

For those that have done them- how long does it take? Since it will be the weekend, I might have to bring DS1 with me too.
Average for me is 20-30 minutes.

  • Mine average 40+min.... From start to finish, and that's if they find his heart rate, and he passes.
I've sat there for 90+minutes before too.

How old is your Ds1? @Britt1406‌

  • My office does a NST at 40 weeks and then induces at 41 if you are still pregnant.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • My doctor told me that I'd have to have one if I went over due, but then he ended up sending me for an induction at my first appointment past EDD, so the NST never happened.

I had to do lots of NSTs with DS1 though, and they weren't bad. I think maybe about half an hour each. I would try to find someone to watch your DS though because they're pretty boring, and you can't move while it's happening.
