Itchy Scalp...pregnancy or just winter?

FTM and first time in a Midwest winter. I'm 12 wks now, but I've noticed for the last few weeks that my scalp is always itchy. Not really itchy anywhere else, just my scalp. Wondering if this is from pregnancy, or if it's something I should expect every winter. And if anyone has the same problem, any suggestions for shampoo/conditioner?

On another note...I tried feeling my uterus today since I felt it at the doctors office. It was like trying to palpate a liver (my nurse/medical friends will know what I'm talking about) but I was able to find it! So exciting!

Re: Itchy Scalp...pregnancy or just winter?

  • It's both pregnancy and winter. Dry skin. Lot's of lotion and lots of drinking water. I normally use head and shoulders for the scalp issue. Use it 2 to 3 times a week. Should help.

  • Dry scalp/skin is probably more related to the dry air from winter/heat in the home. The best thing to do for your scalp is to actually wash your hair less. I do mine once or twice a week. Let your natural oil producing glands do their job.
  • OP--Use a tea tree shampoo and conditioner or selsun blue. The condition is called sebhorreic dermatitis. @KirianaTi‌ the itches might be leading you down the path to eczema...Cetaphil makes a lotion called Restoraderm. It will make you stop itching, stop any rashes from forming, and it is non-steroidal so it is completely safe during pregnancy. Use it after warm, not hot, showers and that should help tremendously.

  • Thanks @2dumbdogs‌, I actually already only wash my hair about every three days...I mean, I spent the last 4 years in Las Vegas (hello dry weather) and didn't have this problem at all.

@sarawalks‌, I'll try the head and shoulders...hopefully it does the trick
  • I noticed a dry scalp soon after finding out I was pregnant. I normally have some severe dry skin year round and my dermatologist said it is dermatitis which is often mistaken as eczema since little is known about dermatitis and what causes it. I have noticed mine was getting worse closer to the time of my periods and that hormone changes could be a factor.

I started using head and shoulders with almond and noticed a big difference after two weeks of using the shampoo. If it is dermatitis it is best to wash your face and skin daily to keep the skin clean. Hopefully it is just the weather though! Hope you can find something that works for you!
  • If your scalp is itching at the top of your head it's your hormones mommy... I'm pregnant with #5 and with my third and fourth pregnancy my scalp began itching and my hair dresser immediately asked me if I was pregnant...that's how I knew we had a baby on the way with #5... hormonal changes... congrats!
  • Ugh I live in north eastern ohio and get it about every year. The air is so dry and so is our apartment!! I have to use static guard in my hair andbefore my husband and I kiss we have to poke each other to get the shock out lol a static shock on the lips is NOT fun! So, it's probably mostly the weather is what im trying to say lol
  • I use jojoba oil on my scalp to moisturize, sort of like a hot oil treatment. Then I shampoo it out. It helps.
  • Try rinsing with apple cider vinegar once a week. It has done wonders for my itchy scalp and the overall health of my hair.
