Broken bones!!

I am 30 weeks now and I slipped and fell on ice in my drive way. I landed on my knees everything is fine with baby but I broke my fibula in le left leg and now have a cast and crutches. They say it could take 6-10 weeks to heal. It's been very difficult to do anything at all. I have a 2 yr old son also. Does anyone have any advise or has this happened to anyone else in previous pregnancies? I really hate the thought of still being in a cast when I go into labor.

Re: Broken bones!!

  • Sorry this happened to you! I don't have any personal experience with this type of situation. Just wanted to say I hope you heal up well before your LO arrives.

  • Ouch. Sorry that happened, but happy your LO is okay.
  • Oh my gosh, I can't imagine! I'm glad the baby is ok.
  • Glad everything is ok with baby. Ice is no joke. I hope that you heal quickly.
  • Oh no! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I have no advice. Hope you heal quickly & before LO arrives.
  • No advice but I am so sorry this happened to you and I hope you recover quickly!
  • Oh no! I'm so sorry that happened. I can't imagine having to run after my 2 y.o. on crutches ever, let alone while 7 months pregnant. I hope you have plenty of help and a fast recovery.

LET THAT SHIT HEAL. A fibula should take roughly 6-10 weeks, as your doctor said. I convinced my doctor to let me have a walking boot instead of a cast in 2013....and then I kept swimming and cycling on it and did an Ironman. It took mine 8 months to heal.
    *snip*

Holy shit, Maui, you're kind of a badass! *hurls lame excuses for not exercising/training out the window.*

OP so sorry this happened!! Glad baby's ok and hope you heal soon.

  • I'm so sorry too! I have broken this bone while not pregnant. It was at the ankle so I was 100 percent non weight bearing with crutches for two months. Crutches must be almost impossible while pregnant. If you can weight bear, then the boot would likely be much easier but if you can't i think luckystarz is right you should see if you can rent a wheelchair!

Good luck and I hope you have an uncomplicated recovery!
  • I'm not allowed to bear weight on it at all. I wouldn't be able to move in a wheelchair in my house. :( but for dr appts and what not it would be nice. I have my mom and bf and some friends to help me. I've come to the conclusion that I will probably still be in a cast when I go in to have my daughter.
  • My friend was in a cast for her second labour she said that it made it so much worse.
Sorry you are going through this.
  • No advice, but I'm so sorry that happened to you!

You poor thing! I feel for you. It's bad enough when you aren't pregnant!
  • It was a clean break right at the ankle. I also have soft tissue damage and they said my inner tibia is fractured too. This just happened 2 days ago so I'm still in a temp cast. Have to wait til friday for an appt with the orthopedics. My foot is now bruising and swelling and it's very uncomfortable. They said they will recast Friday. I think the hardest thing is no being able to play with my son and do the things I used to with him. We are in the middle of potty training and he is doing well but still asks me for help.
  • No advice but I am so sorry this happened to you!!! I hope it heals quickly and they let you transition to a boot!!
  • No advice, but I'm glad baby is okay and pray you heal quickly.  So sorry this has happened to you, I couldn't imagine.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I go in to see the orthopedic specialist friday and they are supposed to put a new cast on it and re X-ray so I guess we will wait and see what happens.
  • This is officially the worst thing that could of happened to me...
  • You are going to be just fine. Take it easy, knit. Bones and yarn. Do you have family help with your 2 year old? I have had 3 babies. I would opt for epidural early with a cast. You don't want cramps in your leg during contractions, trust me. The less you do on that leg, the faster the cast comes off. Homeopathic symphytum (comfrey) is fantastic for bone injuries, the traditional name for that herb is bone knit. Hugs and healing thoughts.
  • I don't have any advice but I'm so sorry that happened! I can't imagine having to be in a cast on top of everything else. I hope it heals quickly.
