What do you think about the name 'Angus?'

We just found out that baby is healthy and happy and a boy. Now it is time to get serious about names.

I'm not going to lie, I absolutely love the name Angus. Love it. What do you think? And you can be honest. The whole reason I'm asking is because I know that he'll be teased and called 'anus.'

Beyond loving the name, here are my reasons.
1. Alexander McCall Smith's story 'Dream Angus' is an all time favorite of mine. It is a beautiful story.
2. It represents my scots-Irish heritage. Dh is Hispanic, so baby will have a Hispanic last name.
3. Angus is the Celtic god of laughter, bravery, and good dreams. What else is there to aspire to?
4. I don't really worry about the teasing. I have a boy's name and it has been a pita my whole life. I was teased as a child and as an adult I always get entered into systems as a male, especially insurance. But that didn't define my childhood nor my life now. Having a name with a good story and meaning would define me more.

  • I should also add that DH is open to Angus and also love the name, but is very anxious about the teasing.

certified angus beef honestly came to mind.

I like the name- it's similar to August which is one of my favorites- but those was my first thought that came to mind when I read it. That said, I think you should choose the name you like and try not to care a whole lot about other people. If it has meaning to you go for it. Our name has been criticized on the bump for being a nickname and needing a "full" version. Don't want a full version so not Im not doing it.
  • I would have said I hated it, but the movie Angus made a huge impression on me, so if you love it I totally support it.  I voted neutral.

  • Hahaha! The beef thing does come up too. But would we think that if we weren't pregnant? Because everything makes me think of food right now.
  • Sorry-all I think of is angus beef patties!
  • It makes me so hungry for steak. I don't love it for a baby's name.

FWIW I just asked DH what he thought of the name and his exact words were "angus? Like beef?"
  • I voted that I hate it. But you seem like you love it. I say go for it! Just because it's not our style, doesn't mean it's not a good name.
  • I was also thinking beef.
  • I'm with most everyone else. All I can think is beef. But if you love it it shouldn't matter what we think.
  • All I can think about is a beefy angus cow. Mmmmm....cheeseburgers.
Thats what came to mind for me too, Hamburgers

  • Nms but if you love it go for it.

Agree with pp though. Anus is an easy go to tease name

  • I think it would be awful with a Hispanic last name. Scottish last name? Yes. Hispanic, yikes.

  • DH had a scottie dog named Angus growing up, and it's nms, but I agree that it's better than any of the made up names you hear now.

  • I don't like it at all but only because it is really nms at all. Plus there is a negative association there with DH's family.

I had a kid in my grade growing up that was named Angus and he was never teased or anything and as a kid "beef" or "anus" never really came to mind in regards to his name. I really think it would sound weird with a Hispanic sounding last name though.

  • I actually thought of Angus Young from ACDC.
  • I would have said I hated it, but the movie Angus made a huge impression on me, so if you love it I totally support it.  I voted neutral.
I keep thinking about the movie, too!

I'm kinda neutral with the name, but agree that I'm not crazy about with a Hispanic last name.

If you like the name but have reservations, how about making it the middle name?
  • My grandfather was named Angus, so I'm a fan.
  • The first thing I thought is that it is such a Scottish name (my background).

Did not even think of beef until other's mentioned it.

I like it, but was in school with an Angus, and would not use it because of that.

  • Another "immediately sounds like beef" to me and not a common name I hear a lot, I've never heard known an Angus. NMS...

  • Angus is the real name of the kid (now adult) on Two and a Half Men.

  • Totally NMS. Initially before I read your whole post I thought "no way!" It just sounds so harsh when I say it. But after reading your reasons it actually seems quite beautiful, a strong name. Baby may not love it during the early school years, but I would hope over time and when he's old enough to understand the meaning he will grow to embrace it.

Go for it! My married name is VERY Hispanic and I would love to throw people for a loop w a really not common first name.
  • I love it!!!!
Go for it, you have great reasons and its a strong name.
Just because McDonald's decided to specify what breed of cow they use for their meat.... Bastards!!!
    I know a few Angus's in Aus

So I say go for it!

Not a fan. His nn would be Gus and that just reminds me of the fat mouse in Cinderella.

    Awww Gus Gus!!

This! This may also be a problem. Dh is rather short and round, so the baby might be too. Both ds and dd are lean and ds is shockingly tall. So it would be bad if Gus turned out to be a Gus Gus.
  • In my mind Angus = big beef cow

Or that 90s movie with the angry kid named Angus.
  • Makes me think of Angus Young AC/DC ;)
  • It makes me think of the vaginal changes thread...but that's not your fault. Dear Lord....stop the madness.

I thought the same thing, it's like we're Bluetoothing eachother! We're definitely on the same wavelength!!!
  • Even though I wouldn't name my child Angus doesn't mean you shouldn't! Name your child the name that "speaks to you" and don't worry about what others think!
