8 mos this week - still not crawling?

LO is still not quite crawling yet. She can push up all the way on her arms, and kind of army crawl around/backwards on her tummy, but hasn't crawled yet or tried to push up to stand. Anyone else in the same boat??? My mom keeps asking me if she's crawling yet and I'm starting to get paranoid.

Re: 8 mos this week - still not crawling?

  • DS is the same as you are describing. He is about a week away from 8mo. I'm not worried. He'll go when he's ready.

  • Funny timing, my MIL is currently on the phone with my DH insisting that DS should be crawling. He'll be 8 mo in a little over a week and does what you described. He kinda rolls to things that he wants to and I'm sure will be doing better crawling when he is ready.
  • DD is doing similar things, though not quite at the army crawl yet. She'll be 8 mos in the 22nd and I'm pretty sure she won't be crawling by then. I think it's an 8-10 month thing. She'll get there when she's ready. Sounds like she's on her way!

DS army crawls and has attempted belly off floor crawling with no success. DD only ever crawled with 1 leg out to the side. I've also heard of kids skipping crawling. With as fast and far as DS can go army crawling I think he might just be satisfied with that!

  • No crawling of any kind here, he doesn't even roll around. I know he can roll just choose not too. He almost butt scooted towards me the other day so I'm guessing he'll just do that
  • I read somewhere that 6-10 months is average crawling age. My nephew didn't crawl until close to 1 year and he is perfectly healthy :)
  • A week after DS turned 8 mo (dec 30th) he started doing the worm. 4 days ago he started actually crawling with his belly off the floor. Don't worry it literally happened over night and now we have to chase him everywhere!
  • Nope, not even close. He sits up well, but to move anywhere he just log rolls or army crawls. I can't even get him up on all fours without him screaming. My BIL never crawled, just scooted then walked.

I also think crawling is a 10 month milestone. I'm not worried. My kid is fat, he has a lot to work with lol--- he will get it eventually.

  • DS will be 8 months on the 16th. No crawling here either. He is close but I don't see it happening in the next few weeks
  • No crawling here. She's 8 months and seems to have little interest. She's good at sitting unassisted and has started bouncing while seated but no real motion toward crawling. I'm betting she'll be closer to the 10 month mark before she crawls.
  • This is pretty normal...I don't even think crawling is considered a milestone anymore because some babies skip it completely. That being said, LO is not crawling either and he doesn't even seem close (8 months on the 22nd). My older son crawled literally on his 8 month mark, but we could tell he was getting there prior to that. LO can't even seem to understand pushing up on his legs. Eh, whatever. The longer he is immobile the better...it opens up a whole new world of challenges.

  • 8 months isn't late to be crawling. The norm is 6-10 months. What you describe... totally normal. Ignore your mother ;)

  • I wouldn't worry too much. My sister didn't crawl at all. Went straight to walking at 10 months! My DD will be 8 months on the 26th and is no where near crawling. I can tell she wants to move but she just lays there and cries while on her belly after about 3 minutes of trying to move. I just keep thinking about my sister and it helps me not worry as much!
  • Its normal. My DD didnt crawl until 10 months and pedi said that was normal age for it. My DS just started sitting on his own at 7.5 months. Each baby is different. But if youre ever really concerned, confirm with your pedi.

  • No crawling here. She'll be 8 months next week. She does not like her tummy and is more focused on trying to sit up when she ends up on her tummy. She started getting up on her knees then I realized she's trying to sit up not crawl. She hates being on her tummy. She's scooting around a lot and seems more interested in standing and sitting but still face plants as well.

  • I didn't read all the responses (sorry!) but I think 8 mos is early in the range for crawling. I wouldn't worry! My first child didn't crawl until 9 mos.

  • Dd will be 9 months on the 22nd and she doesn't crawl. She scoots backwards and rolls. This week she has finally started getting on her hands and knees and rocks. So hopefully she will be crawling soon.

  • I know my guy isn't crawling on all fours yet...he's got the army crawling down and man is he SO fast! My mom said I started walking around 9 months and I skipped crawling. I will be happy to take whatever comes but would I really be ready for him to do that? Hell to the no. Everytime I blink, we're on to a new phase!
  • No crawling here. I have a feeling she will be late at crawling like my DS. He didn't start till around 10 months.

I second this. My son was in OP's boat until 4 days ago and I didn't think he would crawl as soon as he did. I figured he would army crawl or crawl backwards until he figured out how to walk, because he just WASNT getting the crawling thing down. But then one day, he moved 2 feet! Then, the next day he moved 5 feet. Now, just a couple days after that, he is crawling across rooms. It'll happen. Just be patient. And THANKFUL.

DD isn't crawling either. She gets up on all fours and screams. She hates it. DD1 started army crawling around 8months. She wasn't crawling on all fours until about 10m.
ETA here's the cdc developmental milestones info.
    1 year: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/milestones-1yr.html?mobile=nocontent

    9months: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/milestones-9mo.html?mobile=nocontent

Not crawling is listed as a concern at 1yo not 9m.

  • DS is 8months tomorrow and he's doing the leaning forward/rocking thing but doesn't get the crawling thing yet. He'll end up moving backwards, or in circles but the idea of moving forward hasn't clicked with him. He was a late roller at about 7 months so I figure he'll be late at crawling too. He's meeting other milestones and developing normally so I try to focus on that - plus, they're still on the young age of "average" for crawling - so it's ok! It's hard to remember that when it seems everyone else's baby is crawling already though (that's the same age)!
  • DS just started. He hasn't figured out to get up form his belly yet.

Honestly I was more concerned about this language. He wasn't babbling yet or saying any sounds really.

However this week he popped 2 teeth, started crawling and babbling.

It's all in a range. Some are faster than others. My friends ds has been doing this month's early so I was always like hmm. But DS seems to be on the avg rather than early or later. All kids are different.
  • As other pp have said, every kid is different.

Both my kids crawled early but ds1 walked later than a lot of his peers. At 3 he talks but not clearly or always in complete sentences. In all cases, I'm not worried because both my brother and I talked late and walked late.

  • Our pediatrician said crawling isn't a milestone they look for. They look for walking. Some babies never crawl and instead walk first.
    Don't worry! It will happen!!
  • My little guy isn't crawling either.  He gets around a little by rolling and doing a bit of an army crawl on his tummy, but that is it.  My other two started army crawling around this time but weren't crawling on their hands and knees until later.  Like others I have also read that nine months is average.  Enjoy the lack of quick mobility for the time being. ;-)  Once they start crawling on hands and knees they are FAST! :-)
