Unproductive cough... Suggestions?

So, I have had this cough for about 2 weeks now, and the last couple of days it decided it wasn't going to be productive.  I feel like I am hacking up a lung with no relief, and it is wearing me out big time!  I know the big part of the sickness is gone, but I can't breath!  My MW said I could take MucinexDM and it really isn't helping.  I asthma too, so this is a really big problem for me.  Does anyone know anything that actually WORKS and is safe for pregnancy?

Re: Unproductive cough... Suggestions?

  • an herbologist recommended "Umcka" to me when I had a cold early in my pregnancy. Its a powder you mix into warm to hot water (like theraflu?) its homeopathic made from the "pelargonium root" (I went and got the box, couldn't remember). She said it would help with all cold symptoms but it specifically relieves upper respiratory symptoms.
I kicked a pretty nasty cold in a couple of days and I felt loads better than I did using sudafed (my doctor approved list had mucinex, robitussin, and sudafed none of which were working for me)

  • oh PS. its a health food store item, I couldn't find in walgreens and didn't even bother looking in a grocery store pharmacy.

  • That's a great suggestion, I have an herbalist here in town... Sounds like they might carry it?

  • Proventil HFA! If you have Asthma then you are coughing because you are inflamed. try using your rescue inhaler when you have a coughing fit. it you have to do this for more then a few days you may need Pulmicort or another inhaled steroid to bring down the inflammation. (i have been going through this for the past few week.)
