What kind of birthday parties did you have as a child? Did your parents go all out, or was it a low key kind of thing? And is that affecting (effecting? I never know) what you plan to do for your LO in the future?
Birthday parties when I was a kind were kind of middle of the road. A bunch of kids over, or a sleep over when I was older, what I wanted for dinner, ice cream cake, a few balloons maybe, probably games and prizes? It was fun, but not a huge thing.
I plan to make LO's a bit more festive but not OTT. I love decorations and fancy cake though. (Hmm, maybe I'll need to hire @elf828 and @mevaroo)
We had all kinds of parties. My sister and I have birthdays a day apart. We generally had low key -- grandparents and a friend for dinner. Occasionally we had a big friends and family thing. We did get to have sleepovers, a roller skating party, etc.
Oddly enough, the party I remember most was a valentine's day party I had when I was a tween. (Not related to bday at all.)
My parties were super low-key. We had to 'earn' the party with good behavior. Usually I'd have 2-4 friends over for dinner and cake. We always had games. I don't remember there being a theme ever. Always I got to choose my birthday dinner (which was separate from party dinner), and always my cake was homemade.

As a kid, we had a small party at home every year with a few friends from the neighborhood or from school. We'd have cake and ice cream, play a few games, and that would be about it. If there was a theme, it was just plates/napkins/cups with pictures on them. When I was older, (middle/high school) I would have my friends over for a sleep over. Never more than 2 or 3 people, though.
I do go a little more "all out" for the kids' birthdays, but really I just love entertaining, crafting, cake decorating, and all of it. I really have so much fun planning and executing their birthday parties.
By "all out", I mean in terms of theme. We still do parties at home, and we don't do, like, jumping castles or pony rides or anything too crazy But I love decorating for the theme, having themed favors, foods, etc.
I remember a school friend from when I was 5-7 (she moved after that) used to have her part at her grandparents horse farm....horse rides, fairground rides, a massive feast of food - it was HUGE!!!!! My mum used to take us to the movies with a couple of friends, or a magician etc Mostly low key. I'm having friends and family over for Em's, a cake, and just a get together. My friend has hired a soft play facility for her daughter's 1st birthday and invited about a million people lol
I remember my parties being at different places - McDonalds, a gymnastics center, a swimming pool. Then later, when I was probably 9, I had slumber parties.
We each only got to have one party, but were not told this beforehand so my sisters and I all had sleepovers with maybe 5 friends when we were 8-10 for our party. Usually birthdays were not that big of a deal in our house. We got to pick what my mom would make for dinner and there would be cake and ice cream for dessert. My birthday is in the summer so most of the time we weren't even home for it.
