Sharing a room with baby

Re: Sharing a room with baby

  • Families have slept together for thousands of years, and still do in many cultures. It was great for breastfeeding, for sure.

  • I agree that it's super easy for breast feeding. Sounds selfish but at 3am my main priority is my own sleep, so if sleeping beside the baby helps me get back to sleep sooner, I'm all for it!!!
  • My DS roomed with us for his first 13 months.  He had a nursery, but we bed shared for the first year.  It was super easy and convenient till DS started using me as a human pacifier all night long around 9 months.  I barely got any sleep till I finally broke and moved him to his own room.  It was really stressful and rough transition, but I'm glad I did.  I plan to bedshare again with this little, but hopefully not for as long.  Maybe only the first 6ish months and then have it in a pack n' play next to our bed after that.

  • Yep. We kept DS in his crib in our room until he was 10.5 months old (way too long) because we didn't have a room to move him into. With this one, we will be having "her" stay in our room until she's 6 months or so. It's recommended to help prevent SIDS, and I'd be a nervous wreck. Also, Kellan will be moving upstairs when she moves out of our room and into the nursery. He will only be 22 months when she comes and I'm not ready for him to be on another level, the nursery and our room are both on the main level.

  • Yep! We did for the first 4 months with my first and will do about the same this time around. I like to get baby in her own crib/room sooner than later though so she's used to it.
  • When we had DD we lived in a one-bedroom apartment with a HUGE Master bedroom. We actually wound up setting up half the bedroom as a nursery (had her crib and a changing table/dresser along one wall), and the other half was our King bed, dresser, closet, etc. It was perfect! We moved into a 2-bedroom when she was 5 months old, but even then she slept half the night in our bed.

With DS we had a bedroom for him, but we knew he would start out the night in our room. Well, he wound up in our room for over a year, and we loved it!

We once again have a huge master and our other 2 kids share a room, so the baby will be in with us for at least a year.

  • We had DS in our room until 15 months (were also in a 1 bedroom) and then moved him out and into his big boy bed and new room when we moved to a 2 bedroom. He didn't have any transition problems.

We were advised share bedroom, no bed sharing by hospital when he was born. I'll be keeping this one in our room for at least 6 months.

As for bed sharing, We ended up having him in our bed a few times around 8 months and I assure you he was not the one being smothered. I woke up suffocating multiple times because he was sleeping across my face! He also took up half our bed by sleeping across the bed and herding us to the edges while we were sleeping. So no bedsharing again for everyone's safety this time
  • DH and I have a 3 br place with PLENTY of room for baby and I still plan to have the LO sleep in a bassinet in our room for the first few months just to make middle of the night feelings and changing easier on me and DH.

  • We have a 4 bedroom place but 2 of the rooms are upstairs so DD and this LO will technically share a room. In reality we r late going to start trying to get DD to sleep in her room. She is in our bed most nights.

With this LO I will start of with the pack and play in our room for a few months and then either keep it that way until they no longer nurse at night or bed share if baby isn't sleeping.

My first refused to sleep in a crib or anything of the sort so we bed shared and she slept great. I never planned on it but we both needed sleep. I think I might miss her in the bed once she goes to her room.

  • We will room share with the PNP for the first couple months. With DS we room shared for the first 3 months, with him in a PNP in our room. Our bedrooms are on different floors so I didn't want to move him until he was STTN or down to one wake up to save on a millions trips up and down the stairs. Room sharing is what's recommended, not bed sharing. There are ways to bed share safely, but many peds and AAP don't recommend it (or at least it was a big no when DS was born). I would sometimes pull him in bed with us after a 4-5am wakeup just to get a little more sleep, but never liked him in the bed more than that til he was older. H is a really heavy sleeper and I feared he would roll over on him and not realize it, and I never got good sleep.

  • We live in a 4 bedroom house and we will def. be sharing a room and probably a bed. Our 4 year just moved to his own bed. I love the closeness and the bonding of being so close. There is no right or wrong in room and bed sharing you have to do what is best for your family.
  • We bed shared with DD for the first few weeks but then we moved her to her crib in her room at 5 weeks.  She STTN the first night.  I don't know how this one will go, considering this one will be born in the middle of summer. I'm sure for the first few weeks again s/he will be in our room

  • we had DD sleep in her rock n play for about 6 weeks, then moved her into her room. she never really woke up at night, so feedings weren't really an issue. We did have a rough time transitioning her into her crib. That didn't happen until about 3 months.

  • We room shared/coslept for about 9 months. We had a bassinet and then transitioned him to his pack n play before moving him to his crib. It's really not that big of a deal if that works better for your living situation. This will be our second and when someone asked me about getting another bed I laughed because my 1 yr old is just starting to sleeping in his room/ crib consistently.
  • I coslept. At 1 year I decided it was enough because DS was the only one getting sleep and me and my SO were exhausted. It wasn't easy getting him into his own cot, we had a sleep theropist come out and try to help but I couldn't sit and listen to him cry for me. I went away and my SO decided to put DS in his own room and let him cry it out. When I came home he was sleeping all by himself and it was bliss! At 18 months old he was rushed into hospital and went through emergancy surgery. He got so clingy and ended back in my bed, he's 2 in March and we need him back in his own bed before baby makes a appperance. We won't be cosleeping again because of our own experience. But we will be room sharing, all 4 of us! [-O<
