Kinda dumb holiday meal question..

So, this is my first time cooking a big holiday meal of this caliber, start to finish. Even though I'm just cooking for dh, DS, and myself today, I'm still making full size casseroles and a pretty big ham, so we have leftovers. We have family coming to visit tomorrow and Saturday, so I'm banking on those leftovers to feed people.

On the menu I have:
-Ham (I'm planning on doing a simple brown sugar glaze with sliced pineapple on top)
-Green bean casserole
-Buttered/herb carrots
-Candied sweet potatoes w/ marshmallow topping
-Mashed potatoes
-dinner rolls

In what order would do cooking/heating? Obviously mashed potatoes and carrots I can do stove top, but as far as casseroles and ham, we only have one small oven with 2 racks so I cant do everything all at once.

Im thinking I'll get the ham started first and while thats going, I can stick casseroles in? Or would you prep and cook casseroles first before the ham goes in? Then reheat as needed?

Yes I'm new at this...so spell it out for me like I'm 5. TIA!

  • I would do ham and then prep casseroles then cook those. Not sure how long your ham needs to cook, but I would imagine it would stay warm longer than the casseroles anyways. If the dinner rolls just need heated that won't take too long. You got this! :)

  • Thanks ladies! Re: ham cooking time...Idk exactly exactly long either. The glazed ham recipe I'm looking at says 10min per pound. I mean..ham ks cooked already and really just needs to be glazed and heated thru, right?

I cant imagine it taking forever. Haha I'm such a newb at this!

  • I would cook the ham first, because that doesn't really nneed to be hot out of the ovenue for dinner, and then I would cook the casseroles together at the same temp to be ready and hot at dinner time. They mostly just need to be heated, right? The rolls I would just pop in the oven to warm right at the last minute

  • Thanks all! I did end up getting the ham in first. I did a butter/brown sugar glaze with some orange juice in the bottom of the pan. I also put sliced pineapple on top of the ham. So thats been going almost an hour now. Probably another 45 min to an hour and it should be done. I'm basting as it cooks.

Candied sweet potatoes are prepped and in a casserole dish, ready to go into the oven when ham is out. Green bean casserole, I'll prep now and probably throw in the oven when candied sweet potatoes go in. Regular potatoes are boiled and I just need to mash and add seasonings. I'm getting ready to boil up my carrots now and then I'll just add butter and seasoning to those when they're done. Rolls are prebaked and I'll throw those in for a few minutes to warm st the very end. Everything's coming together nicely!
