Fluoride

the toothbrush thread got me thinking, is my family the only one using a multivitamin with fluoride included? My pedi prescribed it, we get it at the pharmacy. We started it at 6 months, prior to that was the vitamin d. I have a dentist appt. tonight actually so I'm going to ask her, but I'm curious if I'm outside the norm on this.

Re: Fluoride

  • @trtlcrzy‌ it's pretty painless, I mix it into breakfast (yogurt or oatmeal) or the first bottle of the day.

  • That's rough @trtlcrzy‌ Hayley eats all the things.
  • @sing2phins I was thinking the same thing.  We had to work with Claire a lot on this because the dentist used "birthday cake" flavored toothpaste and kept saying it was cake to Claire.  We had to expressly tell her it was just for toothbrushing time and how she can only have it when Mommy or Daddy give it to her.
  • We just tell Cadence it is candy. She knows what "candy" is and is more than willing to take it. This probably won't work when she is older and can tell the difference between real candy and this crap we keep shoving in her mouth.

You have to do what works for you, but this is dangerous. You're going to have some work ahead of you teaching her that what she's always been told is candy isn't. And you're going to have to be especially careful that she doesn't get her hands on it unsupervised.
Something like this happened to me, I was told the pink antibiotic medicine that tastes like bubble gum was a "treat" and I ended up drinking it for fun when one of my siblings was prescribed it. I was unharmed (as far as I remember, but my mom was mad) but medicine = treat can be dangerous.

There's my semi-relevant anecdote for the day.

  • We give Poly Vi Sol in his evening bottle and have since he was only a few months old. We use the nursery water with fluoride.
  • Funny, my kid LOVES his vitamin.  Our pedi recommended a prescription one that has less crap in it, and he gets so excited as soon as I pick it up.  I, too, have to keep it out of his reach b/c if he sees it he will put the bottle in his mouth and try to suck on it!  Some days, the only way I can get him to sit still while I get him dressed is to give him his dropper of vitamin and he'll sit still for 2 seconds.

I almost want to taste it to see what the excitement is about!
  • thanks guys, I guess I am outside the norm. I'll have to ask my pedi about this at our February visit. I forgot to ask the dentist last night of course.
  • @SJacques7‌ if I remember correctly we are in the same state, but at different ends, perhaps this is a local thing tied to the water? Either way I appreciate everyone's feedback and will be asking for sure at our next appt. to make sure it's still age appropriate
  • @karadee1

My little sister drank a bottle of Dimetapp when she was 2.5 and I was 5. Apparently I got it down off the top of the refrigerator for her. I have a memory of pushing the chair across the kitchen for it. Then I remember running to tattle. My poor mom.

My sister was given charcoal and she was hospitalized at least overnight.

  • @SJacques7‌ yep, same state. We don't have city water either, but we are on the island and there's supposed to be all kinds of lovely things in our water sources, so we filter out water- maybe that's why they recommended it, but I'm not even sure that came up.

We spend a lot of time in the north of Albany area in the summer, for some reason I thought you were in western NY. We will have to figure this out next summer!
  • Whoa- that's where I am. Looks like our LOs will be meeting at the track!!!!
