Seizures

So this morning, DD had several minor (but still frightening) focal seizures. We saw the pediatrician and she referred us to neuro so we'll go there on Monday. I hope not, but does anyone have any experience with this at all?

My daughter already has multiple food allergies and severe eczema (thankfully under control for now), so I'm thinking we should be done with chronic conditions, here, but obviously life doesn't work that way. I'm praying with everything in me that this is some super-minor thing that she'll outgrow or something but...I guess we'll see.

Re: Seizures

  • My brother had febrile seizures when he was little that turned out to be nothing.  He had a neuro workup and my parents were worried since my dad is a n epileptic but he outgrew them.  Did she have anything you know of that brought them on?

  • DD had a few febrile seizures that never reappeared, but they sure were scary.

I had a few experiences as a child (but older, maybe between 5 and 7 years) with what I now understand are minor seizures.  I also had childhood migraines, which I'm guessing may be related.  I remembered having these occasional weird experiences where my thoughts would start racing madly, then my brain would sort of freeze up.  Once I fell on the ground, another time I was practicing piano and fell forward onto the keys, and a third time I had a weird time-stretching experience while I was bouncing a ball (suddenly I perceived the ball as bouncing reallllly slowly - and it turns out this is a siezure-related phenomena). For some reason I never told my parents, almost like I was ashamed about it.  I finally discussed it with a psychologist years back.  She says she thinks it's fairly common to have mild seizure-like experiences in childhood during periods of rapid brain development and change.

That said, it's super scary and I hope you get answers from the neurologist.  Keep us updated.

  • A friend of mine is going through this right now. For him, they're brought on by fevers and it's been happening more with teething. The drs say there's nothig wrong and he'll probably grow out of it by the time he's 6 or so. I hope that is the case for you as well.

  • Yeah, her temperature was 99.5 this morning so we (myself and the pedi) didn't think it was from her "fever", but I'm really hoping that's all it is. Thanks for the support, ladies. :-)

Other than her run-of-the-mill cold, I know of nothing that could have brought this on. She hasn't had any since this morning but I suppose I might have missed one as they were rather short.

I'm gonna be a ball of nerves until Monday. And DH is already talking about getting a second opinion at Lurie Children's Hospital depending on how it goes. Lol--thanks, DH. He did tried to make me laugh by saying we he couldn't see if Derek Shepherd had transferred there. I'm so glad he has a sense of humor.

  • I'm sorry that you are experiencing this. DS recently had four seizures due to a gastrointestinal virus. The hospital did not think that it was brought on by fever because the one temperature I took was low, and he didn't have a fever when we went to ER. The neurologist said that viruses sometimes spark seizures in LOs, but it was probably not indicative of a reoccurring condition.

I hope that they find that the cause is not serious. Many kids outgrow them. Please PM me if you ever need to talk.

  • Thanks so much, ladies! DD has been fine today, so hoping it continues.

@DCKate we're in the burbs and I SAH, so easy-peasy to get there. I think we'll probably go no matter what the doctor says on Monday because it can't hurt to get a second opinion...you know, since it's her BRAIN. Lol. My parents recently had an experience where they trusted a doctor and he made several stupid calls resulting in two surgeries and much therapy and potential lifetime immune deficiency for my dad, so we're all on hyper-alert now.

  • My little cousin used to have absent siezures. She has a genetic condition. Shes ten now and has not had a siezure in 6 years. Not trying to scare you, but just let you know that even if it is serious your LO could still live a normal life
