Weight gain

We went for our 15 month checkup today and pedi said DD is in 34% for weight she's always been in the 50%. He's not overly concerned but would like to see her gain a few. Any tips? Besides whole milk, and nuts. She's not into meats or eggs

Re: Weight gain

  • it has been my experience that they start to lose weight around this time because they are more mobile.  And now going forward they will grow in height and then gain weight more slowly.  My son weighed almost 30lbs at one year and he is 2.5 now and weighs 33 lbs.  They just sort of stop gaining a ton.  DD was 20.5lbs at her one year and at urgent care last week she was 19lbs.  I guess I don't have any suggestions...cheese, pasta, avocado are just a few ideas that come to mind.

  • My girls get a smoothie everyday that you can put milk and full fat yogurt in as well as fruits and veggies. Cheese is another good one too. DD1 isn't into eggs either but I make her French toast by dipping the bread into an egg batter and put honey and cinnamon on it.

  • Weight gain is a complete struggle with us over here.  LO will only eat a few bites at a time.  We actually went to a nutritionist to get some ideas and she said to give him everything and anything.  She recommended we try protein bars and adding protein powder to his food.  Avocado is a good choice too.  But we're under the 5% mark so our recommendations were probably more involved than you would need.
  • oh and she also recommended adding olive oil to everything, which add quick calories that he doesn't really notice.
  • DD loves yogurt and string cheese is our go-to snack. Avocado is a good idea, but DD hates it.  Haha.

We struggle with LO being a very picky eater as well. I always offer her new things and know she wont like it but I'm hoping one day she'll decide to be a little adventurous. Yogurt, cottage cheese, and quesadillas are my go tos. Actually, I make frozen yogurt drops and DD absolutely loves them! I will use the indivual yogurts (greek since it has more protein) to get different flavors (you could use plain and flavor them how you'd like with fruit, etc) and I just decided to start mixing in a veggie puree that I make so that she'll get some more veggies in. These are also great for teething since they numb the gums and to keep her busy while I'm making our meal or anytime really. They are bite size and I keep a freezer bag full of them at all times! I love snacking on them too :)

ETA : We do a lot of buttered pancakes (homemade with fruit and veggie puree mixed it) and french toast sticks (made with an egg batter). Everything I make for DD I make a big batch and freeze so they are always handy.
  • My peanut was 17lb 5oz at her 15mo appt. She has always been small, but pedi said their appetites tend to drop off around this age, so it's important to give them high quality snacks. She loves avocado, cheese, smoothies, and has a big bowl of plain whole milk yogurt every morning.

I wouldn't be so concerned with your LOs number/wt, but rather offering good nutritious food and letting her eat what she will.

DS allergist said this too not so much for calories(in our case) but for healthy fat he can't get elsewhere. DS Loves sautéed squash and zucchini. As for weight gain, at his 15 month check up he weighed less than at his year. He's a chunk so the Dr didn't care. He did tell me to make sure I was nursing him at least 3x a day still though.
