Should I freeze it or keep in fridge to feed?

edited December 2014 in Breastfeeding
So I an new to having any sort of extra milk around, as with DD1 I had chronic low supply.
Now i am pumping about an oz after the morning feed extra on top if what DD2 eats, and I'm debatig whether I should freeze it (maybe in 3oz increments??) to have for emergency OR keep it on hand and feed in the PM on the day when pumped, when they say your supply is lowest...

I guess I'm trying to pick yall's brains... esp if you had low supply before. I am always scared that some switch will flip and I won't have what she needs and I won't have anything extra on hand for her haha.

So, advice??

  • Honestly, I wouldn't give a bottle in the pm if you are guessing your supply is lowest at that time.

Nurse, and nurse often in the pm if you are worried about supply. The more you put baby to breast the more demand you put on your breast to make more milk. It's much less work then giving a bottle and pumping to replace.

Freeze it in 2 or 3 oz increments and use it when your not with baby (don't forget to pump to replace it anytime Baby gets a bottle)

  • Exactly what pp said. Freeze it in case you need it for later-- you want a date night or of your supply decreases later.
  • Freeze! And think happy thoughts about your evening supply :)

  • I think I read somewhere that supply being lowest is some type of protective biological mechanism for baby. So it's normal and your baby doesn't need any top off with a bottle in the pm.
