Pooping on the delivery table.....

Just came across this blog, and it's cracking me up.....

https://www.scarymommy.com/pooping-during-childbirth/

Yes, it happens, and it's not a big deal, I promise! (This coming from a momma who was TERRIFIED of doing as a FTM......and has survived it at least once. Probably twice; they didn't tell, and I didn't ask the second time around!)

Re: Pooping on the delivery table.....

  • Ugh, I was actually one of the few who was mortified by it. I kept apologizing to the nurses. :(  I dread the possibility of it happening again. But you're right, most people don't care. I'm just weird.

  • My husband says I didn't but I will never know for sure. I feel like he might have just been telling me what he thought I wanted to hear haha

  • Oh my gosh I was terrified of this happening with DS, but when the time came to push, it wasn't even a thought in my mind!

  • They actually say if you poop, you know you're doing it right! ;)  I'm pretty sure I did with my first. No clue about the next 2, lol. Nobody ever told me, and I've definitely never asked! Even if I did ask, hubby would just tell me I didn't. He was trained well by the nursing staff and birthing class! lol
  • I thought I did because it smelled like it, but my DH said it was just gas. IDC really, I pushed that kid out in 3 pushes, so whatever was there, wasn't there for long ;-)
  • I know I did because I had a mirror and I made a comment about it.... my doctor was like its a good thing that means you are pushing perfectly! I only had to push for 35 minutes so I am not sorry it happened! The nurses just grabbed the paper and we all moved on!
  • I'm a pooper too! Lol. Didn't with my first cuz I went on the toilet before hand out of pure nervousness... Not sure about my second cuz I was sooooo numb and for sure with my 3rd cuz I had a discussion about it with the nurse... I apologized many times and she didn't seem phased in the least. Now with #4 on the way, I'm almost positive I'm gonna be a pooper again... Whatcha gonna do? Can't avoid it!! Lol!!

Even as a FTM this isn't something I'm overly concerned about.  Like one PP said, if there's anyone who can't handle the sight of some body excretion, particularly with everything else that will be going at that moment, then they shouldn't be in the room.

I was thinking about this last night actually after having watched some birth videos on YouTube...realized that in those you somehow never see any poop (at least I didn't).  It makes me think that it truly is just something no one even notices, given what else is occurring at the same time.

I watched a youtube video the other day, and there was definitely poop!! And a lot of it. It was an unassisted home birth, and the woman kept handing her hubby some toilet paper, and he wiped her about 6 times. Rather uncomfortable to watch... but she didn't seem fazed by it.

I pushed on my hands and knees for half of it- but when I got really close, they had me get on my back and they had a bunch of blue paper things under me.  If you poop, you likely go on those and they just take the paper away and discard.  I had a mirror and could see stuff going on.
But you use the same muscles for pushing that you do when you poop.. so you know.

  • DH has had to plunge the toilet more than once with the gigantic rocks that are pregnancy poops. Whatever, he can deal.

I told DH to bring a bathing suit in case I want to shower while in labor and in case I want to lean on him in the shower. He was like, "What about your bathing suit?" LOL I am pretty sure I will be naked the whole time I am there, I just don't care. There is literally no shame to be had here.

  • It really wasn't a big deal... in the moment, it was the absolute last (actually nonexistent) on my mind, all I was focused on was getting that baby out... and its true that it means you're pushing right if it happens

I found out much later that I did do it indeed, according to H.  He still loves me and wants to have sex with me and stuff.  Docs/nurses see it all day erry day.

    It'll be OK

I was petrified of it happening to me even though I'm a nurse. When i was crying about it when it happened my SO was like "Do you know all the blood and guts that have been pouring out of you all day? Poop is the only normal thing I've seen you do." I still care though lol.
  • My sister calls me "Poopy." So if it happens, at least I already have the nick-name.

The nurse had to "help" me poop, that was not fun and I apologized eleventy billion times. This time my goal has been to stay regular so it won't happen at all. But it was no big deal after I got over the embarrassment.

  • Is it weird that I kind of hope I poop? I'm more scared of that first bm PP.
I've heard people saying this a lot, but I didn't think it was a big deal at all. I was nervous because I didn't know to expect. And then I sat there for a minute waiting for something bad to happen. But nope, that was it. You'll have just pushed a baby out. You've got this!

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • Omg DH is gonna be beside himself if I poop. He is in complete and total denial that girls poop. I know this is entirely absurd but I guess it helps him sleep at night.
Now I'm kinda hoping I do just so he has to be more realistic.

As someone that worked in l&d, and was present for many deliveries, it's truly not a big deal. No one gets grossed out by it, or pays it any mind, other than to wipe it away if need be. Adding: I've never seen it be like a whole "load". Lol. Just a small amount, and most of the time, the significant other or support person don't even notice it.
