House renovations?

edited December 2014 in April 2015 Moms
As DH slammed our bathtub tile off the wall for the last hour it had me wondering if anyone else is doing some work of their own!

Anyone else doing some house renovations or remodeling before baby arrives (outside of the baby's room)? If so, what are you all in the middle of/planning on doing or losing sleep over the fact you haven't started yet?!

FTW we are putting in a new bathtub and wall set in our hallway bathroom...18 inches of bubble soaking water for me! Our bathtub that we are removing is only 10 1/2 inches deep...I'm so excited!

    Edit for right words.

  • We are going to reface the kitchen cabinets and get new countertops and backsplash!
  • We don't have any major renovation projects going on, but are painting all of the trim in our house. We're almost finished with the upstairs, but still have the whole downstairs to do. We also replaced our kitchen countertops last winter, but never redid our backsplash. Those are the two things I'm insisting on having completed before the baby comes!
  • @ejay15‌ trim is on our list too but it's SO daunting...

It really is! We've pretty much been doing one room at a time since we found out I was pregnant in August. It looks SO much nicer, but it's taking forever!
  • We are having the family room done next week (painting/molding, etc) after having had the windows replaced a few months ago and plans are in the works for our master suite - bathroom/closets and spiffing up some other things. Hopefully demo to start in Feb (our town has a long permit process) and we can squeak it in by April. Our house is an endless list of projects. I was gutting the kitchen/powder room/mud room last pregnancy. So much fun!

  • Starting demo tomorrow for an entire renovation of the first floor. Will be living upstairs for three months. Eeeep!
  • @rmaurer08‌ that's so exciting! Keep us posted and happy moving!

  • We are going to refinish the bathroom and kitchen cabinets. Also probably have new carpet installed and have a little painting done. We bought this house in the spring and I feel like it needs a lot done but we will just have to take our time updating it.

  • @rmaurer08‌ Beautiful home! Congratulations!
  • @saltbox40‌ - I know how you feel about the darn kitchen. We worked on ours since April and we finally finished it in November. We are finishing up our fireplace this month (perfect timing for the California "winter") and then the beverage bar in January (though I won't be using after birth!). Pausing to work on the nursery before the baby comes!

THANKS!! If I can be an AW for a min, here's 2 exterior pictures! :-)
Your home is beautiful! Congrats on making a 10 year old dream come true!
  • I have trim to do and we just put large 25 foot beams into our cathedral ceilings in our living room, and re-sheet rocked as well as tore down an entire wall and replaced.. waiting for the plasterer to come. Shoot me now! This was not suppose to be a project for now but insurance sent an inspector and a deadline.. What a hellish month this will be!

  • We are going to put new carpet in the bedrooms and we are working on insulating the garage to make it a semi living area. It is slowly turning into the fun room of the house.

  • We bought a 90 year old home last summer and will be renovating it probably for forever. Before baby comes we want to re-carpet and paint our basement, paint our dining room, paint one of the upstairs baths, and paint DD's room. After baby arrives we are planning a kitchen/dining remodel. A year or so after that we will completely overhaul the upstairs - do a master suite and closet, re-do both baths, and turn one of the giant rooms into a bedroom + office. At some point we will also knock down the existing garage and add a new, bigger one with a guest suite. Grand plans!

  • We ripped out the old floors and toilet in the bathroom this summer, only to find some bigger issues that were not on our budget. We slapped it back into usable working condition and have been working with HUD on a pretty decent sized repair loan. It's zero interest and we'll actually have HUD licensed contractors working on the job. By the end of it we'll not only have an entirely new bathroom with new sub flooring and repairs to the foundation, but a new back door and new bedroom window(which we discovered earlier this year actually has a small leak).

Was hoping it would all be done before end of year, but it's not looking like it. Still waiting on one more bid to come in from another contractor before we can even decide who to use, then once that happens we'll know dates! That's just the non-nursery remodel stuff.

I'm so glad to hear others are in similar and/or various modes of remodel! It's a bit draining and stressful as it is, but add in the worry of pregnancy and BAM, it's like a perfect storm of awful!

  • We are almost finished with an entryway remodel we started a few weeks ago. We took out the old front doors that were not very secure, and were cracking from sun exposure, widened the doorway and put in bigger doors.  We also replaced the entryway tile.  To put in the new doors we had to basically remove the outside facade on the porch and put in new horizontal concrete siding (the rest of the house is vertical siding nastiness...for now).  All we have left to do is put the already stained moulding around the inside of the door  and baseboards leading up to it and its done.

We bought our house a little over a year ago and its been nonstop projects.  The first reno took 4 months. I told DH we're done for a while after this one!

We also just finished work to the nursery this weekend too.  New floors, breadboard wainscoting, and working on a new closet system.

  • Before my DD was born we replaced all the windows. She would have frozen to death last winter otherwise.

We are actually putting our house on the market in March/April (because I'm a crazy person) so we are doing tons of work at the moment to get it ready to sell. The two major things are new flooring downstairs and gutting the upstairs bathroom. I'm not looking forward to the construction.

Thanks, we're thrilled. If you can swing it, it's definitely nice to make the whole space feel fresh and updated.
  • We recently put new carpet throughout the main floor of our house. We also did new flooring in the entry and tore out a built in bookcase and put in wrought iron spindles to open the living room to the lower level. We need to paint the nursery and finish 2 bedrooms in the basement. Plan is for our oldest daughter to move to the basement, middle daughter move to the oldest daughter's bedroom to free the nursery for the baby.
I don't see any of this actually being finished before the baby comes:(
  • We're halfway through remodeling a bathroom right now! We gutted the whole thing. We live in an older house and it was in terrible shape. We have to finish it and then get started on the nursery (just painting and pitting up chair rail).
  • Thanks to the lack of ventilation in our master bathroom, we had black mold growing. We had a contractor come in and rip out everything. We are also replaced the stand up stall shower for a jacuzzi tub, since we got a good deal for it. All that's left now is for tile to be installed and to paint.

We also had to hammer back in the sheet rock nails and patch and sand basically every room in the house, so we have to paint every. single. room. and hallway.

We're working on getting the nursery patched and painted before Christmas, and pulling out the 40 year old carpet in that room.

We already removed carpet from my living room and my bedroom.

I feel like the list could go on forever.

  • We are finishing off most of the basement so we can have a spare bedroom, huge closet for me, and a living area down there.  We just had our generator installed a few months ago too so we could start this project because we never want to risk the sump pumps not working if we are putting this much money, time, and effort into the basement.

    All Welcome

  • We are updating both bathrooms and getting hardwood on our stairs. The plan is to have this done before our DS arrives but I have a feeling it will all be last minute as my DH likes to work under last minute deadlines.
  • My husband works in real estate, so we are flipping our house. We have finished the upstairs. We painted all the walls, door, and trim. We replaced the carpet and refinished the bathroom cabinets. We put new closet systems in. The first floor is almost done. we refinished the kitchen cabinets. We still need to replace the island countertop. All walls, doors, and trim have been painted. i really just need to paint the laundry room. Our last part is the basement. It is already finished. It could just use new paint. Out goal is to get it finished and on the market in January before the Spring market.
  • We are in the middle of a total house renovation/gut! We have been at it for almost a year now. We took the whole house down to the studs and even replaced several walls due to termite and water damage. We replaced all the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC and are just about done hanging the new sheet rock. Our new windows will be installed in the next few weeks. It will basically be a brand new house when we are done, and DH and a couple of his friends have done all the work! Thankfully we haven't had to live in it for this process, but our two bedroom apartment is shrinking by the day with two toddlers running around. We anticipate being in the house before baby comes, but who knows! It has been so much fun planning how each room will come together and where everything will be stored. The lack of storage in our current place is driving me insane!
  • We are redoing our whole basement! Done dry wall and paint now onto floor and start our bathroom!
  • There are a LOT of remodels/builds going on in this group!!

We are currently living in a VERY small 2 bedroom "cottage" as I call it while our new to us home is being fixed up! We literally gutted the entire house, it's a very old farm house, and tore down one of their old additions. We are building a new addition as well as fixing everything else in the house. The only room we didn't gut was the kitchen! There are no walls, floors, or bathrooms right now and it looks creepy! The addition will be done by this weekend and then they will begin the rest of the interior of the house after we do the electric. The plumbing will be new, the electric will be new, and we have to get central H/A installed as well. Plus new walls, floors, carpet, windows throughout, siding, and roof! It's going to be a lot of work but our contractor says we will be moved in by the first of February!! I cannot wait. My boys are thrilled to have their own rooms and I'm just excited for a fresh new home!!

  • I just want a home!!! We're living with my in-laws for over a year since we bought property together with them and plan on building eventually. Trouble is, they don't feel the urgency to get it paid off and move on to the building process nearly as much as I do!!! It's a good thing we get along pretty well, but I could almost have a panic attack thinking about how crowded my husband and I are going to be in our two rooms (one is a 'livingroom' and one is our bedroom) and one bathroom with a baby thrown in to the mix. And it doesn't really matter how well we get along; I absolutely HATE living with other people!!!
  • When I was pregnant with DD, DH decided to renovate our second floor.  He pulled down ceiling, walls, insulation, and pulled up the flooring and subfloor...  He did all of this in December.  DD was due at the end of May.  I told him if it wasn't done by April I was going to pay someone to come in and finish.  He wasn't even close to done.  The company I had come in said they would be done in 2 weeks, it took them until the middle of May before I told them to get out of my house.  I painted the walls myself and had carpet installed by a different company.  The room is still only 90% finished, but we were out of time and moved the office and guest room up there to make room for DD downstairs.  Definitely not doing that again.  It was extremely stressful and I was very worried DD was going to come early and I would have no nursery.

  • We will be doing a nursery and a big boy room for DS1 after the new year. I also want to paint our bedroom. The house was painted before we bought it, but every single surface is beige, except for white ceilings, so I want to add a little color. We are also replacing the garage door so I can park inside the garage this winter.
