Is paneer safe? (google shows conflicting answers)

Whenver I eat Indian, I usually get paneer rather than meat.  Does anyone have definitive information on whether it was safe or not?  It isn't on the list of cheeses to avoid from my doctor, but it is a soft cheese.  A google search says conflicting things (although more say if its cooked it is fine).

  • I've eaten it... this is actually a huge craving. It's heated so it's fine in my book.

  • I will continue to eat it. It is one of my favorite things about Indian food. Remember the only reason they say to avoid soft cheese is in the event it isn't pasturized which is really uncommon in the US
  • I don't know anything about that cheese specifically, but I've heard to avoid soft cheeses because they are more prone to be a source of listeria.
Buuut it's heated in meals so it's okay!

And if you research it most Listeria outbreaks are from fresh fruit and vegetables, not cheese
  • This is going to be my thing on this board, isn't it?

Is it a reputable restaurant with good food/clean standards? Then eat the food.

Exactly. I have been loving my fresh motzerella and brie. You already took my alcohol, don't take my cheese

Yes, this! The issue is unpasturized cheese and most of us could only get this at a specialty cheese shop. Also if it's heated up it's fine!

  • I ate feta, blue cheese, brie etc. during my first pregnancy with zero issues. The only cheese I didn't eat was any raw milk or unpasteurized cheeses. Really I think as long as you are eating pasteurized cheese there is very little risk. I happen to shop at specialty stores that stock a lot of raw/unpasteurized cheese, so I was also hyber vigilant about that. I LOOOOOVE cheese.

  • Saag paneer was my #1 craving when I was pregnant with my son. It never occurred to me not to eat it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! With my daughter I couldn't even walk past the Indian restaurant on our street. This time I'd like to hire the chef to come live with me and cook this for me every night.
