Leg Cramping

I've read that leg cramps during pregnancy can be totally normal.  More commonly what I've seen is at night though.

I've had a cramp in my right calf most of the day.  It has gotten progressively worse.  Of course I googled it (because that's always a good idea) and blood clot comes up.  I don't have a hot spot or any bruising, but it hurts to walk on at this point.  Has anyone experienced this during the day?  I had a 4 hour car ride yesterday and did about 3 of it without stopping, but my leg didn't bother me at all yesterday.

My doctor's office charges $50 for after hours phone calls if they don't consider it an emergency, so I'm hesitant to call.

My mom is a nurse and said I should probably get it checked out due to the car trip yesterday, but I really don't want to waste the ER's time for nothing.

Re: Leg Cramping

  • I had a blood clot in my leg with my first pregnancy. It's annoying to be on blood thinner shots for my entire pregnancy (started at 6 weeks with my 1st when the clot was discovered and started at 4 weeks with my current pregnancy). If your leg is bothering you this much you need to get it checked out ASAP.

  • I had something very very similar to this a month ago after 4 hours in the car and worried about a clot. It felt like the pain that lingers after a killer cramp. I could barely go down the stairs. But I didn't have any increased warmth/swelling. It eased up after a day or so.

  • I've been getting cramping in my legs too. It's fairly frequent but not constant. It comes and goes. I have about an hour commute into work and thought that might be the culprit. I try and rub them out when I can.

I'd probably call the nurse line before I'd go into the ER. It's hard with these things because its likely nothing but there is always a fear it could be something more.

Is it bothering you enough to warrant a phone cal into the nurse? That's sucky they make you pay too. I'm sure it's to deter from frivolous calls but I already have guy over what is worthy of calling a doctor over.

  • I put some heat on it and rested last night and it eased up.  I can't feel it at all today.

  • No the top of the back of my leg is sore, so I'm guessing I pulled something.  I have another long car ride, so I guess I'll take it easy and do frequent stops tomorrow.  Thanks ladies.
