Babys Got a Cold

Well DD has a cold I'm pretty sure. She is really snotty and has a cough. We just tried putting her down for bed and she woke up coughing a lot and seems fairly miserable. During the day she was happy. Can I give her anything like baby Tylenol or does she just have to wait it out. We've been Nose Friedaing all day. Sorry if this is a dumb post, I tried a quick search and didn't see anything.

Re: Babys Got a Cold

  • We're going through the same here. I do like to give Tylenol if LO is really cranky. It's hard to know what else is bugging him besides the symptoms I can see and it seems to help.

DH likes to take LO in the shower with him so the steam can let him breathe a bit. And then putting him to bed soon after so he can get to sleep with a relatively unstuffed nose.

    All the best.
  • Sounds like a cold to me. DD has already had two colds. Tylenol may help take the edge off. The biggest thing, though, is keeping her inclined while sleeping. When they lay flat, they can get a lot of pressure build in their heads, making it pretty miserable.

  • Thanks ladies. I got out the humidifier and hopefully propped her cradle mattress up enough. I gave her some Tylenol and she is snoring away. Hopefully we'll get some sleep tonight.
  • Zarbee's also makes a natural cough syrup for infants 2 months and older. I haven't tried it yet but you can find it at Target, Walmart, etc, if you want to try it.

Hope your LO feels better soon! Mine is just getting over a cold and it's so hard to see them sick. :(
  • We're breakking out the humidifier tonight.  DD woke up early and stuffy this morning. Fun.
  • My friend warned me I wouldn't get any sleep last night. Boy was she right. It was worse than the newborn days. She was so cuddly though so it was worth it. Poor thing is passed out on my bed now. Babies shouldn't get sick, just saying. I think I'll try the cough syrup. Thanks
  • I am not looking forward to my baby's first cold!  We're going to a big wedding this weekend and I know I won't be able to make everyone wash their hands before touching all up on the LO, so I'm preparing myself now....  :(

  • Also put some baby vapor rub on LOs feet then put socks on to help loosen up the mucous.

  • As soon as LO got stuffy, I whipped out the humidifier. That has helped a ton!

Completely unhelpful: when I read you post title, all I kept singing in my head was "Janie's got a gun.." No idea why that song popped into my head lol.
  • Do you gals use cool or warm humidifiers? Also if anyone just loves theirs and it's easy to clean I'm looking for recommendations!! :)
  • We have a cool most humidifier and the saline mist spray and nosefrida help a lot. DD is on her 2nd cold, and this time we have her sleeping in the RNP an it's been a lifesaver. The incline helps her get so much more rest than she was able to get last time. It's been about 10 days and she still have some chese congestion, so she will probably be in the RNP until that goes away.

My pedi did say to only use the nosefrida/whatever bulb you have about 3-4 times a day as it can dry them out too much. She said the saline spray we could use as much as we wanted to help clear her out, but to limit the use of the other.

  • Humidifier, saline, nosefrida.
Tylenol I wouldn't unless there's a fever, my doctors said they really don't recommend cold medicine anymore as there's such a weight span in babies that parents were overdosing sometimes. Especially if the dosing is by age.
  • We made it through our first cold. Nose Frieda was great, sleeping on an incline, and the humidifier.
We have the Crane Drop humidifier. So far I like it. Easy to use and clean.
  • We just survived our first cold- it was pathetic! She had the worst cough and ended up coughing so hard she would gag. Totally broke my heart!
I agree with the things listed except the cough syrup. I talked to my pedi about who said she wouldn't use it- not all ingredients are safe below certain weights (it shouldn't really go by age). Besides that, the best thing we did for Ellie is go into our smallest bathroom, shut the door and blocked the crack under it with a towel, and then turned the shower on hot so the bathroom filled with steam. Basically a strong natural humidifier to help along with the one we were using at night! It really helped!
  • Whike cough syrups are not recommended for littles, the Zarbees mentioned above is not a true cough medicine. It's a bunch of all natural ingredients just like Little Remedies makes a honey one to toddlers ( never give honey under one, so I hear).

We used Zarbees with lo and I liked it a lot. I have the one that says it's a mucous reducer as well. We are also running the humidifier.

Colds suck at any age... 3 1/2 dd is up coughing every night.
