Teething?

So my little one usually sleep very well at night (11hours straight) all of a sudden this week he's been waking up screaming and inconsolable. The only thing that calms him is nursing and then another 20 minutes of rocking to get him back to sleep. He's fussy during the day and on Friday he got sent home from daycare with a fever. I don't feel any teeth yet but he's chewing everything any drooling. I tried some gel, it doesn't seem to help. What should I do? How long till I get my happy baby back?

I'm assuming it's teething because he doesn't have any other symptoms. He doesn't seem interested in the teethers (well no more interested in them than in chewing on anything else).
