Loft Bed for Kids

Would you put your J12 child in one?  Inlaws want to buy this bed for my SIL with the plan that our kids (J12 and Aug14) would use it when they sleepover.  DH plans to tell them to buy whatever they want, but not to buy something specifically for our kids.  That we don't know when a bed like that would be appropriate and for how long.  We think they should just buy a regular twin instead of some fancy $2 K bed that will only last so long for a child.  Ultimately it's their money and they can do whatever they want.

But it got me thinking, when is a bed like this age appropriate?  The only lofts I've ever seen in use were in college dorms.  The one my inlaws are considering is only 4.5 feet tall so it is for a child, but what age child would use a bed like that?

Edit: Remove my snarky comments, it's been a day

  • I love it! I want one for Tumaini. However i heard that they don't quite understand the height issue till five, so it would probably be best to wait a bit.

  • It's a neat bed in terms of being able to save space but no way would I feel comfortable with my child in that for another few years. 5ish? Of course at that point your kid may be scared of heights & freak sleeping in it. I always hated bunk beds as a kid.

  • Thanks!  We figured the bed was way too much for a kiddo slightly over 2 years.  Good to know kids don't get height until closer to 5-years, that will be useful when the inlaws ask us why we aren't so keen on the bed.  @britbratjf Good point about DS not liking heights when he got old enough to sleep in the lofted bed.  I was always a bottom bunk sleeper because I was scared of the top.
