bed sharing when you have more than 1

We bed share with our 2 1/2 yo old a couple of times a week (most of the time he climbs in with us after waking up and walking down to our room). We also have a 8 month old who sleeps in his crib, but on nights when he struggles sleeping I'd like to sleep with him, but don't feel it's safe if my older one is in bed.

How do you all handle that?

We put DS1 in between the adults (he's old enough to "defend his space" in the night, otherwise that wouldn't be safe) and DS2 just next to me. We have a crib side-carred next to our bed, so that gave us a little extra space to play with and helped maintain a "no gaps or corners" safe bedsharing environment for the newborn.
