Small for gestational age at anatomy scan

Im a ftm and this is my first post as well. Last week my husband and I went to our anatomy scan at 20 weeks. We found out we are having a boy :) but were told after that he is small. I had to see a maternal/fetal Dr and have extra labs drawn such as a CMV test and a DNA blood test to see if there were contributing factors making our son small. Our sequential came back negative at 16 weeks. My OB told me not to worry and maybe he is just small for now. It is so hard to not worry and wonder if something is really wrong. Has anyone else heard similar news or had a small baby at 20 weeks? I am hoping he will just go through a growth spurt... I have a follow up ultrasound next week when I'm 22 weeks. Praying I get the lab results back soon too. Any advice or past knowledge is appreciated! Thank you!

  • I'll start by asking how far behind he was measuring.

  • Did they say how far behind? While this is my first I do know that they can't exactly weigh the babies and they're just estimating.

My daughter measured small all along. She was In the 10th- 15th percentile all along. & she is a happy extremely healthy 16 month old. :) somebody has to be small for them to get percentages. I know it's extremely hard not to stress or think all of this testing must mean something- but we did the whole gambit including special ultrasounds 4 hours away (we live very rural) they test "just in case" but just think- he's not going to be a 10-12 lb baby coming out of you! ;) he can also pack on a lot of weight & size still. 20 weeks is only half way! You're doing a great job but remember for you & your husband to focus on something besides that right now- like how awesome it might be to have a couple extra ultrasounds that most people don't get- or focus on all those little kicks & punches! That means he's growing happy & healthy!!!

My current pregnancy with my son - he is measuring the same as she did. They did some extra measuring of my placenta & fluid by ultrasound but since we've been thru this my dr. Feels comfortable for now. We'll check on him thru ultrasound in a few weeks to take a peek & see!

  • Thank you for your input! My OB said he's about a week behind and the maternal/fetal dr said he is in the 10th percentile. My OB said true genetic concerns aren't until they are in the 5th percentile, but that there has to be a margin of error. That keeps me hopeful. He has been super active this week and I love feeling him move. It reassures me, and I'm trying to stay positive, just really wanted to know that I was not alone and that others have gone through the same thing! Thank you ladies!!
  • I wouldn't worry, a week doesn't sound that bad. On the flip side my son usually measured ahead, was 7.5 at birth them dipped to the 15% ever since, he's 3 now. Good luck with further tests.
  • +/- 2 weeks is generally considered ok since this is around the time they start growing at their own pace from what I was told by my own doctor.

Some of DS1's measurements were about a week behind, he was in the lower percentiles for a while but he's about the 40-50s now. This baby measures mostly on track but there are some areas where he was about a week behind "normal", the same ones as with DS1.

We have to remember they're real little people in there and they may be bigger or smaller than average or have short legs or a long torso and that's normal for them. And since they're so little- really minuscule difference can make them measure " a week off". I really wouldn't worry, I'm sorry your doctor has you stressed about this!

  • I just want to share that yes, you are not alone. DS1 was born at 9 pounds (and a week and 2 days late). Not once was I told anything about him being small or large. However with this little boy (I'm 22 weeks and 5 days) at our Anatomy scan at 19 weeks, we were told that he was on the smaller side and OB ordered another ultrasound 4 weeks after the AS to check his growth. That appointment is scheduled for next week. I will update you after if you would like me to.

She did tell me that at this point there is no cause for concern that she just wants to check on him 4 weeks later to see how he's growing.

  • My son is also measuring a week behind. Try not to worry, I'm sure he's fine. He'll get bigger at his own pace.
  • My baby girl measured 6 days behind at my anatomy scan yesterday but they didn't seem concerned about it.

When I was pregnant with my son he started measuring 3 weeks behind at about 34 weeks. He was diagnosed IUGR. He was born at 37 weeks exactly weighing 5 lbs 4 oz but perfectly healthy.

It's easier said than done not to worry, but I agree with the other ladies that a week behind is not too much cause for concern, especially if everything else looked good. Maybe your little guy is just small. Try not to worry about it too much
  • Yeah I wouldn't worry about a week. My daughter is measuring on the smaller side, but that's because the knuckleheads refuse to use my ovulation date instead of my LMP. I don't have a 28 day cycle, but apparently that's witchcraft they don't understand.

  • Thank you SOO much everyone! After my OB said he was about 7 days off, my husband was like, that's it?! He felt very relieved. The Maternal/fetal dr is who had me so worried doing all of the extra tests and asking if I wanted an amnio to be "sure there's nothing wrong." I just felt so overwhelmed and as much as my OB tried to reassure me, it's hard waiting on those lab results and not thinking about the negative. It's really nice to hear all of your reassuring words and know that I'm not alone, and you all had healthy babies, even if small! Thanks again! Means so much!
  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the most accurate measurements are before 12 weeks. After that babies start growing at their own speed. If he's only measuring a week behind I would say he's probably just fine :)

Good luck with your follow up.

Hmm at our a/s the tech told us that all babies are pretty much the same up until 32 weeks then start growing at their own speed

If this was the case, you'd be seeing a lot more people getting their due dates changed late into their pregnancy. And at least from what I know, changing the due date after around the 12 week mark is side eye worthy.
Lol yea that's true maybe she just meant like roughly the same :/

  • Like anniehearts, my daughter was measuring small too, around the 15th percentile. I was measuring 3 weeks behind at my 32 week, so they did an extra u/s. They just told us that she would be small. She was a week late, and was 7lbs.
