Cradle Cap

Does anyone's LO have cradle cap or dry/peeling skin on the top of their head? What, if anything, are you doing about it?

DS lost the hair right on the very top of his head, and now the skin is turning whiteish and looks like it might peel. I'm thinking of gently rubbing on some coconut oil, to see if it will loosen the dry skin and help moisturize what's below it.

Other ideas? :) TIA

Re: Cradle Cap

  • My LO has this on the top of his head, too. I gently massaged baby oil (avoiding the soft spot of course) into the affected area after shampooing during his last bath, though it doesn't seem to have helped. Will be watching this thread......

With DD2 I used baby oil and let it sit and then gently combed it out in the bath. I only had to do it one time.

I just rubbed on some oil and he fell asleep. Lol ...then I googled and saw that you're supposed to wash off the oil after 15-30 minutes or it could make it worse!!! To wake the sleeping baby or not? :-SS

  • DS had it. Mustela Newborn Foaming shampoo and Mustela Stelaker fixed it up quickly. The baby oil thing didn't work.

  • I have a brush that has a little firmer bristle and the nurse told me to lightly brush in the opposite direction of hair growth every day. It must've helped because she's 8 weeks tomorrow and i haven't had that issue. Occasionally it looked like dandruff after i brushed it but nothing excessive.

  • My little girl has a mild case on her eyebrows, nose, ears, and scalp. I've been using coconut oil on it, but I can't tell if it's helping. She also has really dry skin on her cheeks and forehead. It does not appear to be the same as the cradle cap since it's just' dry and red. I think the coconut oil did help with that because the redness is gone. I do hope it clears up soon.

She also still has little white pimples and she's 7 weeks now. Does anyone know if there is anything to do to help those clear up?

  • Lurking from D14 but my niece had this and the ped said to rub baby oil on it and gently bush it with a baby brush or comb and it will come off after a session or two. Maybe ask your pediatrician and see if he/she agrees or has any other ideas.
  • My DD had horrible cradle cap as an infant, and actually she had patches of it until she was about 3. Nothing really worked for it, even stronger shampoo that the dermatologist recommended. We ended up just riding it out and it finally went away. As far as other skin ailments (scrapes, bug bites, cuts, diaper rashes-- not the yeast kind, etc.) I've found that Burt's bees multipurpose ointment is the best! Works great on my skin too.

  • I can't tell if mine has it yet. She has some peelig around the hairline on her forehead and a dry patch on her face where she frequently rubs her face..I'll try the oil next time.

She just ha wayyyy to much hair for some BS cradle cap!!!
  • Mine had it on her head and eyebrows..... I've been using olive oil before washing. It's still there but I think it is better.

  • So it's gone!

The other day, I rubbed a little coconut oil on LO's head in the afternoon, and some of it came off then. That night before bed, I washed his head with baby shampoo, then reapplied the coconut oil. His head looks perfect now. Just wanted to share in case this works for other babies too!
