Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C - no makeup?

I was told by the nurse that for my D&C I couldn't wear makeup.  I'm going to call in the morning about it, but I don't understand why I can't wear makeup.  I can see maybe not being able to wear foundation or something but why not eyeliner/eyeshadow?

Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to wear eye makeup? Also, what then about nail polish?

Re: D&C - no makeup?

  • I don't know about the make up thing.  As for the nail polish, you cannot wear it any time they put you out for anything.  I believe it has something to do with monitoring your oxygen.  The skin under your nails change color if you are not getting enough oxygen.

  • Believe me, I'm so worried about the D&C I'm freaking out and the thought of being knocked out-this is why I'm asking about the makeup! I'm afraid any little wrong thing I do could hurt me!

  • I am not a medical professional but I have to tell you....I did my makeup the day I had the D&C and was never told anything about not wearing it. I wasn't allowed to wear my contacts, but that was the only thing...aside from not eating anything for 8 hours before. I don't really understand why they would say that? Maybe look online for something....and also with the nail polish, I had that on as well. Everything went FINE!

  • I don't know, but my best guess would be since this is a surgical procedure, they need to see your actual color (nail, skin, lips), and also to avoid any contaminants (if you're out, and they open your eyes to check your pupils, but you have mascara on, then flecks fall in your eye and get on their gloves).  Like I said, I don't know, but that would be my guess.  Regardless, I would just go with what the nurse said and not wear any make-up.

I'm so sorry you are going through this and for your loss.  [[hugs]]

Yep. I would skip the makeup.

    Good luck.

  • They told me it was to prevent infection. I wasn't even allowed to wear deoderant the day of the D&C.

  • I'm sorry for you loss... but when I got my D&C this was the least of my worries... I didn't care what I looked like... who has time or energy to worry about makeup?! Just saying...
  • It's because when they put you to sleep for surgery they tape your eyes closed.  Your eyes are taped to prevent drying and from injury.  If you've got eyeliner/mascara on it can flake off and scratch your cornea.  I used to be a surgical tech, so that's how I got my info! :)  Trust me, no one cares.  Good luck and I'm sorry for your loss.
  • Because it's the standard for most surgeries.  I asked about the nail polish because I was curious and the nurse said something about checking your nail color to monitor your blood flow.

  • First, and most importantly, I am truly sorry for your loss.

Secondly, when I lost my daughter - I could care less what I looked like. My concerns were for her - not how cute I looked. I guess I am a bit thrown off  (and shocked) on why it would even bother you - let alone cross your mind. There are much more important things to worry about - such as your child just passed.

Again, "I am" sorry for your loss. It is never easy or fair.

  • Just so everyone knows - I could care less about what I looked like.  I was just curious why I couldn't wear makeup.  I've never had ANY surgery done before so I was scared.  I know it MIGHT OF sounded vain, but I guess putting on alittle mascara or eyeliner is just something I normally do, my daily routine and I just like to wear it.  It has nothing to do with me not thinking about my baby.
