Cloth Diapering

What are your thoughts on prefolds?

I've been looking primarily at Kawaii brand cloth diapers and I was thinking of going with some P&N, and the square Cross Over Snaps, but I've been thinking about getting some of the prefolds with the leak free diaper covers.

Has any ladies used these and really like them? I've read reviews about Kawaii and it seems as though the brand is really liked for the price.

Thanks!

Re: What are your thoughts on prefolds?

  • I haven't tried their diapers so I can't weigh in on that, but I do know I don't care for the covers nearly as much as I like Thirsties. They're not horrible, but I'd rather spend the extra and get a better cover.

  • I liked my Kawaii P&N's for the NB stage. I also used prefolds and fitteds from GMD (Green Mountain Diapers) and loved those. I liked thirsties and rumparooz covers for NB.

Don't commit to all one brand or style until you have a chance to try several things and you know what you like.

  • Kawaii covers are really not great. Love their pockets, but you can find much better covers, even for the price.
I don't know anything about their prefolds, but I love prefolds in general.

  • Thank you ladies for all the great feedback! I'm going to keep my looking and reading.

I think my biggest worry is, I don't know how big this baby will be! My DH was a CHUNKER and I was a slim jim.

My first was a skinny minnie light pee-er and my second is a chunker who can out-pee my 2.5 year old significantly.  Same genetics.

I didn't like the Kawaii cover at all.  It's stretchier than other covers and even though this hasn't happened, it seems like the snaps are going to be torn out of the cover.

I love prefolds/covers though.  Super easy to wash.  Look into blueberry, thirsties, bummis, sweet pea and best bottoms for covers.  Osocosy, sweet pea and GMD for prefolds.

Even though I don't like the Kawaii cover, their pockets are great.

  • When you ladies order covers, do you prefer the one with snaps to adjust to babies size or buy as Small, Medium large sizes?

  • Another vote for the two sized, adjustable systems like thirsties or Assunta. Two covers with three settings each=6 different sizes so great or getig a good fit, but without having to pay for that many covers.

  • What is a safe number of GMD prefolds to buy?

Overall you want about 36 changes for the nb stage to wash every other day. You may also consider getting some GMD workhorses which are fitteds that still require a cover but are really easy for nighttime changes and also easier for anyone helping out with the baby that may not be experienced with cloth.

These are really awesome, I can see how they would make it easier for night time changes when you're are up multiple times a night for the NB stage.
