NBR phones/cable?

DH and I are trying to figure out a few ways to cut back and cable seems to make the most sense. We have Comcast bundle (phone, cable, internet) and it is 190 a month...which is CRAZY expensive. Right now we both have a basic phone but I really want to new camera so to make things easier we are thinking about getting the Iphone 5c so I have a phone and camera. If we do this, we would cancel cable. But I am afraid of not having cable b/c we have always had it. So 'non cable' people do you stream through a device and still watch things? I am most afraid of losing BRAVO to be honest.

Re: NBR phones/cable?

  • We don't have cable. If we stream, we use free Hulu, or amazon prime. We have (free)VOIP, so we don't have a phone line either. When someone calls the 'house number' it rings 10 times at home, then 5 times on my cell then goes to a vertiual voicebox. Depending on the area, we have found the smaller Internet companies give better pricing and customer service.

  • I have considered cutting our satellite (we have satellite for TV, cable for internet, and cell phones-no home phone). But MH won't hear it. He has shows he regularly watches, and is super stubborn. I could take it or leave it. Cutting satellite would save us $100 a month.

MH also grew up with satellite... At home, we had antenna. So 3 channels on a good weather day.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure we would be more productive without satellite.

  • Anyone use Apple TV?
Do you need 1 device for whole house or 1 per TV?

If applicable, how do your DHs watch sports?
  • No cable - we have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. We already had Amazon Prime so Netflix and Hulu cost $16 a month for both. We kept internet and a super basic phone plan. I work for a City and know that calling 911 from a cell adds 2-3 minutes to your response time. That will change soon but for now, it's worth keeping a landline.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • @inluv4life2‌ At least here, dispatch has a number for cell phones to call instead of 911. This supposedly prevents the delay.

We have Apple TV. You'd need one per TV. But I freaking love it. I've considered getting rid of cable several times. When bf and I first moved in together we didn't have cable, and it was great. But since having cable and sports again, I'm not sure I'd want to give up. I know we would be way more productive without it though. For us it's mainly the sports we would miss. With Apple TV I have a sub to Netflix and Hulu+ which I end up watching more than regular cable during the day. At night I still watch all of my shoes on cable. Doubt this helped. Sorry. X_X

Ive been doing some research (I think we are going to take the plunge!)

Anyone have a Roku? Looks like it has more options than the competition.

Also: I had to sell DH on baseball. You can buy a subscription to MLB TV for $130 for the season.
    Still way....way cheaper than cable.

ETA: we can also get an HD box from our cable company for just local channels (the big networks) for $10 a month. And right now, Comcast is giving a year of HBO free with that.
In case anyone is interested :)
  • @Mevaroo When you watch Survivor...do you need a cable password to access the show?? I heard that Hulu doesn't do CBS shows but when I downloaded the app it said 'what is your cable provider' and what is your password? is there a way around this?

  • @carissalynp Mostly, he would be upset about missing sports. All/any sports. UFC, MLB, NFL. He is stubborn enough that he won't even acknowledge that there is a way to see his shows OTHER than satellite (ie Hulu, Netflix, etc).

I have enough computer parts, I could probably buy a few things and rig up a machine simply to stream TV, but he just won't hear of it.
