gd dovyou ever cheat?

My levels are completely controlled by diet. I'm just wondering have you had a day or meal/snack where you just splurged knowing your numbers would be high after? I havent done this but im dying for candy right now knowing it will for sure put me over.

Re: gd dovyou ever cheat?

  • Yes I did

And my MFM doctor was ok with it. If you do small cheats.

  • Yes, I work wonky hours and sometimes I don't get to eat on shift and then I'm so hungry afterwards that I blow my carb limit. Mine is controlled through diet right now but I'm getting a glucose reader whenever the office decides to call in the order because they want to know my actual levels now.
  • Yes! I've been fortunate though as my numbers aren't terrible.

For instance for dinner we went to Wendy's. I had a pretzel burger, small fries, half of a small chocolate frosty & a diet coke. My # was 137 2hrs later. If I would've skipped my fries or the ice cream my # probably would've been fine. It takes a lot (imo) for my numbers to be over 110.

I have also found that peanut butter candy (Reese's) doesn't affect my #s too bad either.

As long as I balance the carbs with protein I've had pretty good luck. Soda is about the only thing I've found that really spikes my #s.

My OB said he wouldn't be terribly concerned unless my #s are consistently 150+

  • I'm not technically GD, but my midwives have me following the diet because my numbers are on the high side of normal (I passed my 3 hour test).  When I want something, I'll eat it but I take the remainder of my meals and foods into consideration.  I won't splurge for a whole day and eat nothing by junk and sugar, but I will allow myself a treat from time to time.
Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis
IUI#1- March 22 (100mg clomid, 75 mg of Bravelle, Ovidrel trigger) = BFP!!!

  • Yes I did cheat. I would try to make it better by walking for awhile afterwards, at least 20 minutes. For the most part that strategy worked, and I'd have normal or marginally high readings 1 hour later.

And then I'd get ridiculous numbers after perfectly normal meals...

  • Yup, and I probably have three max high numbers (out of 28 numbers) each week and my OB is thrilled with my numbers and my weight gain (or lack thereof).

  • Of course. And as long as I keep getting good reports from my endocrinologist, I will probably keep cheating. Granted, I take glyburide with my supper, so that helps a bit and gives me a little more cushion to eat more. But I'm 31.5 weeks and my GD is classified as "well-managed." I visited my endocrinologist one time after I had eaten Olive Garden for lunch and she said "good for you." I find it much easier to behave and stay within my limits the majority of the time if I allow myself to cheat once a week or so.
  • Also, to add, I've been treating GD (my endo said she would call it insulin resistance, not full on GD) since 10 weeks. So if I didn't let myself cheat, I would have lost my mind by now.
  • I just got started, my numbers are borderline high... unless I cheat, (ice cream and thin mints) scored a 173. And they want my fasting below 90, it hasnt been yet. I will probably win some glyburide for the remainder.... and I think a once a week cheat is reasonable. If the rest of your levels are good.
@minirella‌ how do you know you are controlled by diet without a glucometer?

Just curious: How are you controlling it through diet if you don't know your numbers throughout the day?
