Birthday with a newborn

DH is the big 3-0 next week. Since the baby will only be four weeks old I can't really plan a party or go anywhere fun to celebrate with him when DS2 is nursing every few hours.

He's not really the kind of guy who likes gifts so we usually go for new restaurants or experiences to celebrate things. Since we can't easily do that this year and it's a milestone birthday, I want to try and think of something creative to get or do for him. I probably should have started thinking about this sooner but his early November birthday always sneaks up on me!

Any ideas, ladies?

What about Omaha steaks or some other specialty thing that can be ordered and delivered (wine, spices, etc.)? Or some places have chefs that will come to the house for a cooking lesson or just to make dinner (I mean, not around here, but I'm told that's a thing.). Or just a pain IOU.

ETA: that should say plain IOU, not pain, but both make sense in this context.

  • My 30th will be coming up when baby is about 5 weeks old- unless he/she decides they are staying inside until college. My mom is coming over to watch the baby and we are going to dinner and a play. We'll probably be gone 4-5 hours so the plan is to feed the baby before we go and leave her with some pumped milk. Really looking forward to getting out with DH and enjoying dinner and glass of wine!!

This! We attended company holiday parties (DH and I used to work for the same company and loved these events) when DS1 was a few weeks old. It was awesome to get out and feel 'normal' for a couple of hours.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I was trying to think of something more "special" than just our usual date night. We've already gone out to eat twice with just the baby. We also don't have anyone who can watch DS1 that weekend.

I love the Omaha steaks idea or something like that. I have never heard of a chef coming over either, sounds pretty cool and definitely different for us! That kind of sparked an idea too - maybe someone to come to the house for a massage.

  • Could you also have a small group of people come over? Limit it to close friends so that you wouldn't mind if the house is messy and have a dessert party so that it's simple. Once we had kids, this is what DH and I do for New Year's Eve every year. We usually just invite one couple over and play poker until midnight.
