Twin Moms help

We just bought our new car seats and I can't sleep trying to figure out how to get the kids in and out if the car without the infant carriers.

You have to leave one in the house while you fiddle trying to get the other in or out the car.

Our community centre doesn't have a ramp. I am trying to figure out how to get the kids to the drop in play group. And that is just down the street.

I know this has been worked out. But how do you do it?

Re: Twin Moms help

  • I'm dreading the day we outgrow the buckets. FBW had good suggestions and ideas for places to start.

For leaving the house, I've heard of some twin moms using a pnp near the front door as a holding station while you get kids and your things in and out of the car.

Most of the twin moms I know use their strollers everywhere at this age. At your community center do they have any alternate entrance for those in wheelchairs? If not, maybe call them and see if anyone there can be available to help you at pick up and drop off times. If you have a couple of umbrella strollers hooked together you would have something light that they could help you lift up steps (depending on how many and making sure everyone is strapped in tight :) ).

If you haven't already, I would check out the multiples board and ask them. It's been awhile since I've been on there but I know they've had good answers for situations like this. Good luck!

  • I don't have twins- but 2 yr old and the chilla.

Personally I get my shit together before I get them out of the car. If at the store I park near a cart bay with a cart for me to pop Ethan in before James, if using the carrier I get Ethan secured before I get James out. When I need a stroller I get it out and all the stuff in before I start vacating the kids.

I'm sure it's a little different with twins but the concept is the same :)

Pretty much this. (Not a twin mom either)
Mine isn't quite 2 yet, but he's walking.
I get my stuff to the car while the kids are safely in the house.
Then DS1 walks while I carry LO.
Getting out, like FBW I park near the carts, not in the parent parking when shopping.
If the weather is nice I might wear LO and I have carried DS1 while doing so if it was a danger zone.

Wearing 1 while carrying 1 takes practice, but it is doable. (I've been doing it off and on for 7 months)

    My advice;
    1) wear and carry
    2) umbrella stroller
    3) park near carts
    4) and like @ntdane‌ said, maybe call ahead for a helper to assist at the community centre?

    Good luck!
  • Thanks for the tips.

Busy day today. I think I will try a "go pod" at the back door.

I have Bjorn carrier. I tried all kinds of them. None are all that easy for me to get the girls in. They hate being in tight wrappings etc. and the carriers are the same way.

  • Now I'm so freaked out about doing this. When I use a stroller for walks at home, I leave one in and carry the other in, then come back. No way I would do that in public of course.
Exactly.  I still haven't done it.  Poor Patty is really cramped in her carrier.

Plus it just started snowing and it's sticking!

How we supposed to do this all with rotten weather.  Poor babies

  • The upside of my twins still being peanuts. They just broke 15 lbs and will have lots more time in their buckets. Good luck with the transition; I'm sure you will get it down with a little practice!

  • My girls are getting car seats for Christmas! I can't wait to switch them bc the carriers are getting so heavy especially with 2. I imagine I will carry both out and set them down 1 in seat and the other on the seat while I strap 1st baby in. Then carry other baby around to her seat and strap her in? I don't know how it will work, but seems like a pain to leave 1 and keep going back and forth.
  • mine are also still under the 15lb mark and in the buckets...I"m keeping them there as long as possible!!!

I currently make 4-5 trips out to the van (kept in attached garage) before leaving the house anyways.
-take out DS1 pre school bag, diaper bag and purse
-take out water bottle and coffee
      -take out baby #1
-take out baby #2 and have DS1 climb into his seat then I do his buckle
-check the house 1 more time for lights out, make sure I didn't' leave anything/anyone and grab a snack

If I try to carry both bucket seats i just bang into everything so i try to avoid doing that.

When we switch to the convertibles I will probably leave 1 baby in the house in the jumper or safe space while I buckle the other baby into their seat, then go back for baby #2.

At a grocery store I will probably park near the cart return, look for a double cart and bring it over to the van, then put the babies into it. If I'm using a stroller then I would unload it, bring it to the side of the van and put kids in 1 at a time.

I"m not sure what I will do when they are out of buckets and I go somewhere that isn't stroller accessible...I can't imagine anyplace like that anyways.
