Genetic Testing... For ME!

edited October 2014 in June 2015 Moms
I have a new OB for this pregnancy and one of the things they offered me in my "informational" appointment on Fri was genetic testing for myself. She said it won't change anything for this pregnancy and obviously your other two children are fine, but you always want to know for the future.

It tests you for like 150 different genetic mutations and if you have any, they then test your partner to see if they have any that will react together. Very freaky stuff.

I just feel like it would be really scary to know what's "wrong" with me and possibly this child!

BUT it's completely, 100% free, so...

Re: Genetic Testing... For ME!

  • Tough one, but I think I would do it if it were me. Here in Ontario we have a new born screening that's done, and one thing that's tested is cystic fibrosis, my son's came back positive, he had to have a sweat test done to rule out if he actually had it, which thank god be didn't, he's just a gene carrier. After my DH and I were tested we found out he got that gene from me. We wanted to get tested because it would of impacted us if both of us were gene carriers, because our children would have a high probability of having CF. But Sick Kids in Toronto has given us a chance of 0.01 chance of a child having CF after our testing.
Having been threw that, if I could get more genetic tests for free, I think I would.
Sorry I wrote a dang novel

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I personally wouldn't unless I had reason to believe I was a carrier for something (maybe a family history or something common in my ethnicity.
