I have been lurking on the board for about a week so decided it was time to introduce myself. My story is a little different so if they is not the right place, please let me know. I will not be offended.
My DH and I have decided to start trying for our second child. Our story is below. We are both nervous, excited, and scared for this new journey. I respect all the women that have gone through a loss as I understand how hard it is.
On January 13, 2012, we were blessed with our first child, a healthy baby boy. New Year's Day of 2013, we discovered a lump on his neck. As any concerned parent would do, we called our pediatrician who assured us that it was most likely a swollen lymph node from a coming infection. We took him in the next day. On January 2, 2013, our son, was diagnosed with Stage IV, high risk Neuroblastoma; two weeks before his first birthday. Neuroblastoma is a type of children’s cancer that occurs in the developing cells of the sympathetic nervous system that affects about 650 children a year in the U.S. During 2013, he endured eight rounds of chemotherapy, four surgeries, a stem cell transplant that required an eight week hospital stay, 12 rounds of radiation and countless scans and hospital stays. On June 19, 2013, we heard the words that we had been waiting for – he was cancer free! He started his final stage of treatment, immunotherapy, during October 2013 which was scheduled to finish in February 2014. Cancer is an ugly beast – especially Neuroblastoma. The relapse rate is especially high with his stage and risk of cancer. On January 2, 2014, a CT scan was ordered due to the right side of his face beginning to paralyze while already hospitalized for scheduled treatment of immunotherapy – his second to last scheduled hospital stay. Neuroblastoma was back and this time it had returned in his brain and was inoperable as it was located on his brain stem. Less than 24 hours later, he passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends on January 3, 2014.
