doTerra essential oil On Guard

So I just went to a class on essential oils and am really excited about using them but very hesitant to while pregnant.  The book said to use caution and dilute On Guard while pregnant when using topically.  Anyone have any better info on what that means?  I see my OB in November and don't want to call and try to explain what I'm wanting to use over the phone, so I figured I would just take the bottle with me when I go.  I have read some sites that say it's fine while pregnant, some say use caution, and some say don't use.  Right now I'm not using because I would rather be cautious but I just started a sore throat and friends were sick with fevers last week so I'm afraid I'm catching that.  Would love to try out On Guard.  Just looking for more info if anyone has any.

Thanks!

  • I'd recommend using over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, Benadryl and Mucinex if you start having symptoms of a cold. You can also suck cough drops. doTERRA has been served a citation by the FDA for promoting their products as working as treatment and prevention for illnesses when, in fact, they show no ability to do so. More information about this -- including information about their claims on what On Guard can do -- can be read in this letter from the FDA to doTERRA: https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2014/ucm415809.htm

  • OTC meds can help with symptoms and make life easier. I had an upper respiratory infection of some sort last week, and Mucinex helped with the cough, phenylephrine helped with the congestion, Tylenol helped with the sinus headache and Benadryl helped me sleep and dried up nasal secretions, all help I needed because I still worked 50 hours the week I was sick. So while yes, people should push fluids and get rest, OTC meds are an awesome option to have, and all of these meds were approved by my OB.

  • I am really just looking for some info on essential oils, "on guard" from doTerra specifically.  Thanks for the other suggestions though.
  • I don't typically take anything other than Tylenol and Sudafed while pregnant when I am sick.
  • Thanks.  There is a midwife that works at my obgyn.  Maybe I should change my appointment to see her instead of the OB in November.
  • She thinks she might have a sore throat and some of her friends are sick. You suggested a cocktail that isn't necessary for anyone, much less someone that isn't even sick but is being paranoid.

Which is why I said 'if you start having symptoms of a cold', not 'pick up these meds right now and start using them because omfg you're totally getting sick it couldn't possibly be because your throat's dry because you just turned on the heat or something'.

  • I sell and use doTerra. Just use it on your feet every night to help from getting sick only oils that you completely avoid is clary sage. I have been using mine even though pregnant. My doctor is ok with that.

  • A homeopath would know about essential oils. Also if you have any homeopathic stores nearby, they usually have someone that is knowledgeable. I don't use them but my in-laws are high up in a company that sells them and they swear by them. I tried them out about 8 years ago but never really saw any benefit. My FIL is always sick despite using the oils and they will justify that the symptoms would be worse without the use of the oils. We don't use them and we are rarely sick (knock on wood). We just practice good hand hygiene/cleanliness here.

I've gone to a class taught by a homeopath a long time ago, like 8 years ago and one of the oils suggested for diluting is grapeseed. Putting them on the soles of your feet at night is the method that I've heard most often. Oils can burn if full strength. If you are going to use them, I would just practice caution and do your research.

  • i would put the oil in a diffuser, you dont have to ingest it for it to work!

or combine a few drops of oil with baby oil or another carrier oil and put it on the soles of your feet.

    good luck!

  • I also use DoTerra and love the stuff!!!!
On Guard is safe, but if you're nervous you can always call and they can provide a list showing what is safe for expecting mothers and what should be avoided. You could also dilute it and see how you feel. When I checked it was mostly oils that messed with hormones like Clary Calm. I use Breathe all the time, love it!
