2nd Trimester

Bilateral choroid plexus cysts

hi all... I haven't ever posted but have been lurking. I just had my 20 week u/s a/s and my doc called a week or so later and told me my baby girl has bilateral choroid plexus cysts. Does anybody else have experience with this? Obviously we are pretty concerned but our doctor said she wasn't worried at all.

I have no other markers for trisomy 21 or 18. The rest of the anatomy scan was great, my first trimester NT scan and blood work came back perfect and my AFP blood work came back normal. I am 30 and my H is 31 and we are both healthy.

Any insight into this would help calm my fears. We are going to have another U/s in 4 weeks or so to check and see if the cysts are gone. My doc really said she wasn't concerned but since she could tell I was suggested that we go have the u/s at the high risk place.

Thanks!

  • I could have made this post. Exact same situation here. The chance of T18 is waaaay <1% for our babies. We are also doing a f/u ultrasound for peace of mind, but my midwife stressed this is a NORMAL developmental variation in 1-2% of babies in 2nd tri. No further testing is needed at all - honestly it's a waste of resources. The chance of a true problem is exceedingly low. But I have provided palliative care for a T18 baby so I wanted the peace of mind & since insurance will cover a 2nd ultrasound, I'll take it.

  • choroid plexus cysts are normal if seen in the 1st and 2nd tri.. Its in the 3rd trimester that they actually cause concern and thats if you also have other markers as well. So breathe and listen to your doc!

  • I am in the exact same boat, except the doctor also found a calcium deposit in the babies heart. My doctor told me these two things are extremely common, she had another one the same way just an hour before. They clear up on their own in a few weeks. If you have no other factors then I wouldn't worry. I am getting a follow up ultrasound in an abundance of caution. She said cysts are so common pediatricians don't even keep a record of it, since it rarely has any effect.

  • Thanks for all the replies!  I have a follow up ultrasound at a high risk place at 27 weeks just to calm my and my husbands fears.  Fingers crossed the cysts have cleared up!
