I dislike buying jeans and wish that makers had to let someone wear them for a week before they put them out to sell them. Belts are a lifesaver, because somehow I end up with baggy butt every time regardless of brand. (Feel free to tell me what I do wrong when buying jeans. And no, plumping up the booty is not a viable solution.)

I feel like carseats are an investment and a purchase that shouldn't be taken lightly. I belong to a lot of Facebook yard sale groups where someone is trying to sell a car seat (something I also don't agree with), and someone else trying to negotiate the price down because $30 is too much. And these aren't "poor" folks - the group is only people who are frequent customers at a posh baby shop.
Sorry, car seats and car seat safety is my passion, and I wish others took it as seriously as it should be taken

How is trying to save money by negotiating taking the purchase lightly? The real issue here is that people are buying used car seats not that they are trying to get the best price.
I agree the buying used is a huge issue, but that people think $40 is "too much" or "out of our budget" or "it's just for our 2nd car" bugs me like crazy!
I also think it's annoying when people say the more expensive the carseat, the more safe it is. No, they all are safe. They all have the same regulations. You just pay more for easy install, more bells and whistles, more padding, cup holders, how long it will last height/weight wise, etc.

To some extent I agree with you, but...
I'm not an expert, but I think all car seats meet a minimum safety standard. There are some features I think are worth a bigger price tag -- reinforced with steel, extended rear facing, etc. Not all car seats are created equal, though we know they are all safe for baby when used properly.

Agree with Shellbell. A Dodge Neon and a Volvo meet the same safety standards to be allowed to be on the road, however one will perform better in an accident. I'd rather be in the Volvo.

That's kinda what I was getting at. Like Britax, you're always going to pay more for that brand, but they (as far as I know) have the same features as Graco, and some of the Graco ones have higher rear facing capabilities. Also the Foonf, I'm not sure why that pricetag is so high? I've never looked because it's 3 times more than what I'm willing to pay.

Actually I'm not 100% sure that's true. I think Britax has steel reinforcement in the side, and I'm not sure the Graco does. (This is what a bru employee told us.) I don't think it's just a "brand name" thing, like buying dole pineapple vs. store brand when it's all the same stuff. It's why buying a convertible is so confusing, at least for me.
@Missy0483 we bought a Graco like you're getting. I'm not saying it's a bad decision or judging you for not buying a $500 car seat. Just so you don't think I'm being nasty about this.

@shellbell3845 no offense taken at all! I did my research, so I feel pretty confident. I'm also getting the "they're all just as safe as the next" because that's what the car seat techs say in the FB group I'm in. Or maybe I'm just taking it the wrong way?

None of them are NOT safe, I think is the point. But yes, some have more safety features than others. One if the reasons I like the Dionos is they have very high safety ratings, partly because they have a steel frame. As was mentioned some are part steel, some are none. Does that mean the ones without steel are unsafe? No, but the ones with steel.have been shown to be more safe. As @versed said, it's like cars, some have more safety features than others.
I'm generally someone who won't pay more for brand names, but this is (somewhat anyway, brand name is always a thing still) a case where you are paying more for more safety features. For me it's a matter of balancing our budget vs the extra features. The cheap ones are still safe, and if that's what works there's nothing wrong with that. We did got a cheaper infant seat since that was what we could afford at the time.
@Missy0483 I was told the same thing you were. That all car seats are subjected to the same tests and must meet the safety standards. I have not seen any data that indicates the steel reinforcement is that much safer in a crash. I've read that many of the consumer reports that report which car seats are "safer" are funded by manufacturers. I don't don't at all think that anyone who buys the cheapest car seat is making any kind of safety decision.
We bought the cheapest infant seat we could with DS1 because it's what we could afford, but I don't think I would make a different decision if I had to buy a new seat for DS3 even though we could afford a more pricey one now.
It sounds like there's some conflicting information out there about this sort of thing!
$hell you can sit with me. We will eat CHOCOLATE pies, and ice cream, and we will not wear pink on Wednesdays. Sweatpants all day everyday! HUZZZZAHHHH!
Uhhh, I think I got confused @codypup. Sorry. But thanks for answering anyway.
UO? I rarely wear sweatpants outside of my home. I just think my butt looks better in jeans. It wasn't until about 5mo pregnant that I even wore yoga pants/leggings outside my house.
But we can still sparkle together, @bluedot818! And eat chocolate pie and ice cream while the others waste their calories on pumpkin pie.
Wow, some folks sounding kind of judgmental over what brand of car seats to buy. I have a fuzzy memory of a Graco-in-a-Mercedes discussion here back in the day.
Wait, was this the conversation where someone said they think its lame to see someone with a BMW buying a car seat in Costco or something?
It was something like your car seat should match your car. Beater car = cheap car seat, swanky car = $$$ car seat and all that jazz.

Well, then it's a good thing I didn't buy a purple clearance seat because it would have looked awful with the blue color of my car when we're rolling with the windows open.
Re: UO
(Me too, probably, btw)
They're hideous and over priced.
