When to take rings off?

i know this is probably still pretty on but I'm a FTM and just trying to get prepared for the small things. Everyone's bodies are different but I was just curious in other peoples previous pregnancies when and if then had to take their rings off due to swelling. Thanks!

Re: When to take rings off?

  • I didn't have to remove mine at any point. I took my engagement ring off when I went into labor because I didn't want to accidentally scratch the baby with it.

  • I only took mine off around 38 weeks last time. They still fit but they were starting to get a little uncomfortable.

Everyone is different and some people swell more than others. I would wait until it starts to get uncomfortable for you.

  • I had mine resized already lol. This is my first pregnancy and the only reason I resized them was because it was a month before my wedding. I kind of needed them and my now husband told me my engagement ring was too tight and didn't want me to wear it. If i was already married I would have taken them off.

  • 30 something with #1, never with #2. They're a size or two too big now so I'm not worried about having to take them off this time either.

  • My rings started off a little small because when I got them resized I was freezing and not eating right (wedding anxiety and malls are cold, yall). Some days I can wear them and some days I can't due to it being hot or me having a particularly 'swell' day (punpunpunpun!). Whenever you feel they're getting snug just take them off.

  • I had a friend who got really bloated overnight and had to get hers cut off in the ER!!! She told take them off regardless at 5 moths just to be sure.

With both of my previous pregnancies I never had to take them off. This one I've taken them off already. Not to swelling, they were irritating my finger, the same with my braclet and earrings
  • I took mine off at like 7 weeks with both dd and this lo. I have a right hand ring that happens to be adjustable that I wear instead.

  • Thank you so much everyone! I'm hoping I won't have a problem especially since it'll be mostly winter months. I just wanted to get some idea to be on the look out, although I'm sure I'll feel the uncomfortableness
  • I agree with that ^^   This way you don't have to get them cut off!

  • This is my first pregnancy, but I take mine off whenever I shower, wash dishes, wash my face, etc. so I think if it gets difficult I'll just leave them all off.

There is a string trick that's a little painful but it'll get your rings off, without having to cut them. If it ever gets to that point, take some thread and loop it through your ring, hold the thread that has gone through the ring in place, closely wrap the rest of the thread, tightly, up and around your finger, pull the thread that was looped through the ring in a circling motion, up and around your finger from the bottom, and waahlaah, off it goes.

Back on point, my rings are a half size to big, so I won't have to take them off. However, my grandmothers ring is already getting a bit too tight.

  • I didn't swell until after my son was born (weird, I know). I had to take them off after the labor.

The same happened to me! It started before I found out I was pregnant. My naturopath told me it was contact dermatitis due to the changing hormones. The weirdest thing is I switched my ring to the right hand to clear up the rash and have had no new problems.
  • I was able to wear mine throughout pregnancy. I gave birth in September. There were a few days towards the end when I rode home from work and had my finger in front of the ac vent to cool off but they were never really tight. I was always able to get them on and off.
  • I wore mine with DS until about 23 weeks. At about 18-19 I started taking them off at night, one morning they were uncomfortable to put back on so I didn't. It was about 2 months after delivery they fit again.

  • Take them off before you board a plane. I had to get mine cut off around 2 weeks after I boarded a plane at 30 weeks because I had tried EVERYTHING to get them off and nothing worked. I was also pregnant in the summer so that made a difference in the amount of water retention.
  • I take mine off at night anyway. I've already gotten to the point that I can't get them on until almost noon. Last pregnancy I wore them on a chain starting around 6 months or so.

  • I take mine off at night every night. This thread jinxed me because I fell asleep at 8pm fully clothed and with my rings on. I sleep with my arm above my head or tucked under me. I woke up at 3am to my finger super swelled around them and had to take them off. Now at 7am they're back to normal. I think it's the way I sleep.
  • Thank you so much everyone! Great ideas, I do take mine off before showering and doing dishes but that's very smart about taking them off at night, then seeing how they fit the next day. The rubber wedding rings are great too I bought my husband one for his job. Thanks so much!
  • You can always invest in a qalo ring. They are awesome. Medical grade silicone. Cool colors. That is all I wear for a wedding ring now. I like it because I can lift with it pinching and rock climb without worrying about losing a finger.imagehttps://www.qaloring.com/

I was going to mention these! A friend of mine lost his wedding ring and his wife said she wasn't buying him another expensive wedding ring (they just got married in April, so the ring didn't last long) He is a firefighter - so she bought him one of these! They are like $20 and I think a portion goes to Lupus, if I am not mistaking.

If I have to take off my rings due to swelling, I will invest in one, just because I feel naked without my rings on.

  • I took mine off with DS when it started to become difficult to take them off.  Maybe at about 6 months or so. Didn't want them to get stuck.  Personally my fingers ended up like sausages last time and I struggled with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as well.  We went to a local jeweler and bought a cheap silver band a few sizes up that I wore the remainder of my pregnancy.

  • I wore my rings during labor last time, and they were still easy to remove, but like PPs I have always taken my rings off each night and put them on in the morning. I also flew at 32 weeks without issue. Everybody is different, just take your rings off when they start to become tight or uncomfortable.
  • I take my rings off everyday at work, I'm a massage therapist. So I'm aware of if they are getting tight or not. With my boys they got tight but I never bad enough that they needed to stay off, I've never gone over 36 weeks though so who knows. I would hate to have to get it cut off!
  • I left mine on throughout all my pregnancies. The only time I had to take them off was when I had severe preeclampsia. I luckily took them off right before the swelling got too bad. Otherwise I would have never gotten those suckers off.

  • I take mine off at night when I go to bed, but that's bc I scratch my face when I sleep. I never took my rings off with DD (different rings) until I went in for my section, hospital requires it.
We are both on the FD and rescue squad (my rings get hung in fire gloves and rip latex gloves) and he also does diesel mechanic and RR work, so we have tattoos on our ring fingers that are covered by rings but also we have something if we take our rings off...or pg brain kicks in and I somehow forget mine when we go somewhere.
I've never seen the silicone rigs...we may have to invest in a couple they're cute!
  • I took mine off on the way to the OR to have my twins at 31 weeks... but if I had to remove them sooner I would just get a necklace to put them on

My friend who is with the FD loves his and says it has worked out perfect. He lost his while at work - but apparently it wasn't from gear or a fire - it was from playing basketball  =D>

I think I'm going to get DH and myself one, he works with a lot of heavy equipment so there's a possibility of him actually losing a finer if he has a ring on plus he bent a platinum one...err...guys lose them easy and in the weirdest scenarios
  • I removed my rings at 41 weeks last time. The week I was overdue it was 100F, and that's when I started swelling. It took a few weeks for them to fit after delivery.

My hands are already swollen and my wedding bands are very tight and uncomfortable. I just bought a cheap faux set of wedding bands from Charming Charlie today instead of getting my wedding bands sized. I am a FTM and only 13 weeks and 5 days. It seems too soon. Oh well.
  • I didn't have a problem with mine with the 1st pregnancy and knock on wood..don't seem to with this one.

  • I didn't take mine off with my first pregnancy, and it got stuck on my finger.  On my way to the OR they told me to remove all my jewelry because it could cause a problem when they cauterize (ie sparking).  Since I couldn't get it off they covered it with paper tape.  That freaked me out.  I made sure to take it off with my second pregnancy, although I can't remember how far along I was.
